Answer:
It will work for measuring a roof but it will probably be very hard to see outside. You will need to step up to the GLM80, GLM100C, or GLR825 which are made for outside. The distances vary on these from 265ft to 825ft. These are all accurate to 1/16 of an inch @ 100ft.

If (1) the distance across the roof is within its range, and (2) you have something at the other end to reflect the laser, it ought to work for you. The description says 130 feet, but I have not tested it to that distance.

It only works if there is a place to point it at so unless there is no. I have had my husband hold a board to the point I am wanting to measure and that works great. The problem mainly would be the use of this distance measurer outside in daylight. Unless it is cloudy, dusk or dark you can not see the laser point. This is mainly and indoor tool although I do use it outside

You could screw 2 boards together at a 90 degree angle and then place the inside edge of the piece sticking up at the edge of the roof or at the peak. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Makes measuring a one-man job Easy to use and great for measuring large spaces. Only problem is if you don't have something to bounce the laser off of. Other than that this device is very handy. January 26, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Huge Time Saver I use this laser to take quick measurements while doing estimates. I don't have to worry about a tape measure holder or scratching up a clients finishes while measuring. It is very accurate and saves me a lot of time and effort. The features are great too and this one is small enough to slide into my pocket. I wish I had bought one years ago. October 20, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great item for the price I bought this to replace a more expensive unit and am very pleased..It is very accurate and actually very fast in calculating the distance..The laser is very bright as well..I have only used it up to 50-60 feet and it was right on..Also makes it a snap to measure anything over 20' foot long or 10' high when working alone..Well worth the cost and small enough to slip in your pocket if you need to..
