no but it saves each measurement so you can add them together. It also can switch between measuring in feet and measuring in inches--very useful for adding multiple lengths.

No, it uses light and needs a direct path to what you're measuring to. You could do calculations with pen, paper, and basic trig using the laser to take your "indirect" measurements

not sure what you mean by 'indirect' but if you mean, for example, taking an angle and a length to calculate the length of another line, then No, it cannot.
It can accumulate (sum) a series of measurements.

Yes, but not in direct sunlight. You need to be able to spot a small red dot (laser) on the surface 100+ feet away. Can be challenging. It works better if that surface is in shade. Not as easy to use as it is indoors.

Yes. However, the instrument must be able to detect the red laser beam
over other light sources so it may not work in direct sunlight.
It should work under an overcast sky or in the early evening when the sun is low.

Well...yes and no. In low light it sure will as long as you can see the red dot on your target. I had much trouble beyond 80 ft or so in direct sunlight with 20/15 vision. If it had a green laser...not only would you be able to see it, it would be much more expensive. I recommend purchasing a bosch target to assist in measuring and helping to see points for measuring long distance.

yes it has a mode in which it allows you to take two measurements and it multiplies the two to get the area.
Even without that mode though, all you need to do is multiple length x width.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 122 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product works great! I purchased this online and picked it up at the store. The whole experience was great. From ordering to being notified it was ready, the same day! I needed it for the next day. It is great for measuring larger areas. Just a push of the button. It does more than I need but it seems to be accurate every time. I design garages, closets, etc. and its much better than trying to use a tape measure in a large garage. When you start, it places a red dot on the wall you are measuring, push the button again and it gives you the measurement. It even stores measurements if you are doing more than one wall. It also can figure area's but that is something I won't need. I thought I lost it after the first week, it turned out I had left it at a clients. I was thrilled to find it again. In the meantime, I measured a garage with a tape measure and ended up pulling it out too far and broke it. It's my favorite new toy! May 27, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent. Big improvements over older models Really impressed with this little guy. Very accurate, and visible over long distances, particularly at twilight. I could generally repeat the same measurement repeatedly, which I can't say about every measuring device I've tried. I was able to get a 2 year old Bosch DLM130 to compare with the GLM40. The GLM40 has many improvements, including: 1. easier to read screen - clear plastic cover over LED protects and makes the screen very readable 2. backlight on the screen makes it readable in the dark. 3. two AAA batteries rather than four 4.display of 3 most recent measurements Both devices also had some of the same features, including: 1. Camera tripod attachment 2. measure from front or back of device 3. Change meter to feet (decimal and fraction for each.) September 5, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Unbelievable accuracy and easy to use I could not believe the accuracy of this device I checked and double checked and measurements were right on. Perfect for measuring for wall to wall floor covering. Also good for measuring longer distance as long as the beam can hit a solid surface. Easy to use !!! Love this tool. August 9, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Measuring tool... Bosch Laser distance meter. (SKU1000016666) from Home Depot. This product was supplied by Home Depot through the SEEDs evaluation program. Initial impressions, The Laser meter is about 4.3 inches long, and about 2 inch wide, and 1inch high. The meter with batteries weights about 4.85 oz. The laser meter is powered by two AAA batteries, comes with a carrying case that will fasten to a belt for carrying. The meter has a very sharp, back lit LCD display that shows the measurement data, the mode of operation, and battery status. Below the display there are seven push-buttons are used to perform the operation of the meter. The meter is fairly compact. On the back side, opposite the display there is a threaded home for a 1/4-20 screw, so that the meter can be used with a standard camera tripod. The Bosch meter carries a two year Warranty. The meter can display distance measurements in several formats: Meters, and tenths, and hundredths of, or Feet, inches, and fractions of inches, or tents of inches. When performing area or volume measurements, it will display the results in square meters, or cubic meters, or square feet, or cubic feet. These type of laser distance meter use a phase technique that is quite accurate. In this meter’s case it is spec’d to measure within +/- 1/16 inch, from 2 inches to 140 feet. As long as you have an unobstructed path between the objects being measured, you can determine the distance between then in an instant. Impressions; Using the meter it is simple and easy. Position the meter at the starting point of the measurement, activate the laser, point it to the point you want to know the distance to, and press the measurement button again. You can set the meter to measure from the front edge or back edge of the meter, whichever is most convenient. The meter can also be used in “continuous” mode, where repetitive measurements can be taken. This way you can move the meter to, or away from a object till you reach the distance you want. The display in this mode is repeatedly updated as the distance changes. Measurements done in brightly lighted areas can pose a problem with seeing the laser spot on the distant object that you are measuring to, however this doesn't effect the meter from measuring, it just makes it difficult to determine if you are measuring to the right location. So making measurements in bright areas does pose this problem. Measuring to low reflective surfaces at a longer distances can sometimes pose a problem too, but again this can be corrected by simply sticking a sheet of white paper on the object that you are measuring to. Other than these two issues, this meter performs very well. Battery life is stated at 10,000 readings, more than sufficient. The bright back lit display is very sharp, and the back lighting is automatic. The display light turns on for each measurement and remains on for a few seconds after a measurement is taken, then the back light dims and a few seconds later it then turns off to save battery power. The readings will remain on the display till the meter is turned off, or you manually clear them. If left on, the meter will shut it’s self off in about 5 minutes to save battery power. A simple wrist strap comes with the meter and there is a place to attache it at the bottom right corner of the meter case. I have used several different models of laser distance meters, and all have performed well. This model has the basic functions, and performs very well. Laser distance meters are more accurate than using a typical tape measure, and far less trouble. This is a great tool for anyone that is making measurements, I highly recommend this tool. August 12, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very handy tool. I have only used this a couple of times and it worked very well. The display was clear and easy to read. A really handy tool. I gave it 4 star as I have not used it enough. There are a lot of features to this tool that I have not used yet. May review more later. February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Greatest way to measure ever This device makes measurements, including calculating area, really easy, especially where objects are located such to be in the way of traditional measuring techniques such as tape measure. It switches easily between metric and english units, and decimal and fractional units. All you need is a clear line of sight. It's easy to use by yourself as well. February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by An excellent device I was able to figure out how most of it works without reading the instructions. Features: it measures distances (from it front or back edge) and can display those measurements in feet, inches and fractions of an inch, decimal inches, decimal meters. These measurements can be added or subtracted from the previous measurements. In the area measuring mode it will also multiple the last two measurements together and the volume measurement multiples the last three measurements to produce a volume. There are two main modes of measuring, ‘single shot’ - in which one presses a button twice to switch on the laser and take the reading, and then there is the ‘continuous’ mode in which the laser stays on and continually display the distance. One feature I would like to have seen in the continuous mode is the ability to dial in (or remember) a certain dimension (Eg 4’6”) and have it beep when it is that distance away from the target. The screen has a backlight which stays on for a short while after each input. The unit comes with a small lanyard but watch that you do not get it between the back of the unit and the wall when making a measurement from the rear edge of the unit. It comes with a nice belt pouch which I right away decided to use for my smartphone. This is a very useful tool and is going to make future project much easier and more accurate. September 8, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Special Buy? Jump on it. The difference between this and the higher-priced GLM40 viewed on this and other websites is that this is an older model with a slightly less sleek appearance (no, the newer-looking model isn't the GLM40X, the difference of which is a registration tag and nothing else). Otherwise, it performs to spec and is so far working very well. At the purchase price as a special buy, if you don't need the new exterior casing - and you shouldn't since you'll mostly be storing it in the included softcase and barely looking at it - this version is a steal.
