no but it saves each measurement so you can add them together. It also can switch between measuring in feet and measuring in inches--very useful for adding multiple lengths.

No, it uses light and needs a direct path to what you're measuring to. You could do calculations with pen, paper, and basic trig using the laser to take your "indirect" measurements

Thank you for your question. The GLM40 does not have indirect length measurement. This unit has four measuring modes: length, area, volume and continuous length. We also offer the GLM50 which has indirect length as well as length, area, volume and continuous measurement.

not sure what you mean by 'indirect' but if you mean, for example, taking an angle and a length to calculate the length of another line, then No, it cannot.
It can accumulate (sum) a series of measurements.

Answer:
Yes, but not in direct sunlight. You need to be able to spot a small red dot (laser) on the surface 100+ feet away. Can be challenging. It works better if that surface is in shade. Not as easy to use as it is indoors.

Answer:
Yes. However, the instrument must be able to detect the red laser beam
over other light sources so it may not work in direct sunlight.
It should work under an overcast sky or in the early evening when the sun is low.

Well...yes and no. In low light it sure will as long as you can see the red dot on your target. I had much trouble beyond 80 ft or so in direct sunlight with 20/15 vision. If it had a green laser...not only would you be able to see it, it would be much more expensive. I recommend purchasing a bosch target to assist in measuring and helping to see points for measuring long distance.

yes it has a mode in which it allows you to take two measurements and it multiplies the two to get the area.
Even without that mode though, all you need to do is multiple length x width.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very handy tool. I have only used this a couple of times and it worked very well. The display was clear and easy to read. A really handy tool. I gave it 4 star as I have not used it enough. There are a lot of features to this tool that I have not used yet. May review more later. February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Greatest way to measure ever This device makes measurements, including calculating area, really easy, especially where objects are located such to be in the way of traditional measuring techniques such as tape measure. It switches easily between metric and english units, and decimal and fractional units. All you need is a clear line of sight. It's easy to use by yourself as well. February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Super Handy! I'm an electrical estimator & use the laser measurer when I go into large facilities to measure distances and areas. It works great & has saved me a lot of time measuring and improved my accuracy. February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Special Buy? Jump on it. The difference between this and the higher-priced GLM40 viewed on this and other websites is that this is an older model with a slightly less sleek appearance (no, the newer-looking model isn't the GLM40X, the difference of which is a registration tag and nothing else). Otherwise, it performs to spec and is so far working very well. At the purchase price as a special buy, if you don't need the new exterior casing - and you shouldn't since you'll mostly be storing it in the included softcase and barely looking at it - this version is a steal. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing Product Nice product, easy to use and makes the job lot more easier and faster, very handy and convenient to take about. December 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Strong and Reliable I had been looking at laser measurers for several weeks after using one a friend had. I found them fascinating and was very interested in purchasing a quality laser. I found one but the accurate distance was insufficient. When Home Depot put this one on sale and it was 160 ft accurate I knew I had found the one I wanted. I have used it in measuring houses and it is very handy. It is very easy to use and understand and has a very strong laser beam. I highly recommend this unit to anyone considering it! December 29, 2015
