Customer Questions & Answers

will this product measure a standing flagpole.

Can I use this product from the ground to measure the height of a standing flagpole?
Asked by: Whale
No, unless there is a leveled flat plate on top of the flagpole directly perpendicular to the laser measurer that blocks the laser light from pointing to an upward linear infinity. Another option is to use the laser measurer in a continuous mode and start measuring from the foot of the flagpole and walk backwards until you hit the mark of 45 degree angle (laser measurer is angled to 45 degrees and the laser light must hit the tip of the flagpole). Once the 45 degree angle is hit along with the flagpole's tip, then your linear foot measurement read in the laser measurer should equal the height of the flag pole. Use the 45 degree 45 degree 90 degree angle rule, which means 45 degree angle in a 90 degree square has its legs equal to each other, height and width is equal in length.

Can I use this outside to measure the distance of one spot to another spot on the ground, such as, how many feet of pipe do I need to lay?

Asked by: Measuring
Yes, I just did this same thing for running conduit underground. I just drove a stake in the ground at all the points I wanted to measure so the beam had a target to acquire the measurement from.

How accurate is it?

If it says something is, say, 120 feet away, is that + or - a foot, or + or - an inch, or what?
Asked by: MaineGeezer
Calibrated properly, the measurement is accurate up to 1/16 (0.0625 inch in decimal) of an inch. Meaning, an interval measurement of -1/16 > x > +1/16, or that a measured length, x can be in between + or - 1/16 of an inch.

Can this be used for grade and slope work?

Specifically looking for house yard drainage and slope. (Home to street level) Not sure if this unit will work with that need. Seems to do a lot of stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excelent must have tool! I love this tool. When doing a survey for a remodeling job it comes in very handy, not having to move things around and being able to do it unassisted is excellent. Plus its very easy to use and understand.

The only inconvenient part on the measurement for English System conversion is the use of decimals instead of fraction after a whole number when measuring length to a fraction. There is no decimal to fraction conversion, so I have to manually convert decimals to fraction or use a calculator for up 4 digit decimals. This take more time than using a tape measure. Because most US Standard Engineering and Architecture plans for the construction industry uses English System for dimensional measurement, the laser measurer is limited to metric measurement for most of the applications. The area, volume, angle, and slope measurement are an excellent features for both metric and English measurement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Accurate and easy to use I've been using the GLM 80 for the last 6 months, and I've been very pleased with it. The first few times I used it, I also used a steel tape. The accuracy was spot on, so now I trust it's measurements and have not been let down. My uses are almost always indoors. It's very easy to see the dot inside. I did try it outside, and it works great, but at a distance it's hard to spot the red dot in the sun. I had a pair of red glasses that came with a laser level that helped some, but if I were to measure long distances outside I'd probably just grab my measuring tape. I'd definitely recommend the GLM 80 for it's accuracy, durability and great battery life.

Once I figured out how to change the display from decimals of feet to fractions of inches, the GLM 80 has become a very useful device for accurate and fast measurements for making cabinetry. I have not used it for measurements in excess of 23' yet, but it measured the distance probably more accurately than I could do alone with my steel tape. I would definitely recommend this item. But I can offer no opinion if the 265' measurement capability is superfluous, but I wanted it to integrate it into the optional level, which I also recommend. The GLM 80 may be overkill for many, including me (except for the level option).

I bought this for its simplicity plus ability to triangulate height and measure slope. I planned to use it out in the field for outdoor inspections. It does not work for this purpose because you cannot see the red laser dot at a distance more than 12 feet. I even experimented using different colored targets and steadying with a tripod. You just can't use it if you can't see the dot in sunlight. Indoors it is fine, just don't buy it for outdoor use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought several of these for my appraisers to be used mostly for outside measuring of homes and commercial buildings. These work great even in bright day light compared to other brands we have used. I did a lot of research before buying this one, because of having to buy so many I had to make sure it would work the way we needed to use it especially outside. My appraiser like this tool also because it is easy to use.
