Customer Questions & Answers

belt sander or random orbit sander

I am going to finish a table made from salvaged old growth redwood 2x12's glued and joined together I am asking whether a belt sander or a random orbit sander should be used to get a very fine finish obviously I don't want to have grooves or sanding marks when I am done thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
only you know the specific state of the wood for your project but the belt sander will be more aggressive in removal. test out some inconspicuous areas and also practice on some other wood (redwood if possible) first with both tools to get a feel for what grit and pressures work best with each tool. a good belt sander can do a lot of unwanted removal so for safety measure, when working with your redwood project, start with the orbital sander and go high grit count. then gradually work down in grit count (lower grit count the more course the paper) to find what works.

Customer Reviews

5 in. / 6 in. Random Orbital Sander with Vibration Control is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very smooth, but expensive I purchased this tool about 2 months ago and have used it several times since I got it. The tool is very smooth, easy to control, and almost completely vibration free. I purchased the kit that contains both the 5" and 6" pads, but really have just used the 5". This tool is very expensive, but I feel that it is worth the cost, as you get good value for your money. The dust collection system that comes with the sander works so well that I have not bothered to hook up to a vacuum.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and Smooth to the fullest I bought this for my small business to replace a 5" DeWALT sander. That was a great sander. I would put it up against pretty much any for its value. However, the RS65VCL blows the doors off the competition. It is stunningly efficient and the lack of vibration is remarkable. The versatility and ease of changing from 5" to 6" sanding pads via one screw is phenomenal. This sander is a joy to use. It is extremely stable when sanding and creates a pristine piece when finished. If you want a sander that will be your last, make the investment in the best there is on the market.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Permformance Does Not Equal The Price This unit is very large, still leaves swirls and basically performs no better or worse than other orbital sanders I have used (makita, porter cable, festool). The L2 box is nice (but will take up a lot of room on your shelf) for storing all accessories and the fact that you can switch between 5" and 6" is a plus but the power and performance come no where near cost justification. This is basically an overly-hyped product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No vibration. The sander has almost no vibration in the hand. It is a huge improvement over the sanders I have used in the past. The 5" / 6" option is nice, but it will require an online purchase for 6" discs since I could not find them in the usual nearby stores.
