Over the years I have had lots of sanders of all types. I prefer random orbital for most of my sanding. I currently have 3 ROS. A Porter-Cable low profile, A Bosch 2 hand and this new Bosch. The PC has seen a lot of hours and is nicely balanced especially for vertical surfaces, but alas it is showing its age and is no longer manufactured. The Bosch 2 hand is the worst sander I ever had. No matter what I tried it will not keep the pad on because the single center shaft bolt keeps coming loose. I just need to pitch it in the trash. The new Bosch is an improvement. The pad is held on by 3 screws It is quieter then the other two and has far superior dust collection. The dust bag is difficult to get apart to empty. The center of gravity is higher and it is not as aggressive a sander as the other two. Variable speed control is good. The pad is the flattest of all 3. I have hooked a canister vac up to it and there is hardly any dust. Is it Festool quality - no, but then the whole setup only cost $100. From a practical standpoint I prefer the PC low profile for heavy cutting and the new Bosch for finish sanding. Why 4 stars - not enough hours on it to see if it holds up especially the speed control brake and the hook and loop pad. My Bosch multitool H&L pads do not last long

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Raakalainen This tool doesn't cut my steak.
So, I was looking at a bunch of reviews on this sander and noticed a trend in the lower ratings. This review is to state that - if used correctly - this sander is an excellent sander. The primary purpose of this sander is heavier finishing, not stripping. If you want to strip stain or heavy paint, or smooth out a very rough surface, obviously you need a higher powered sander. Like a belt sander. Or a chisel or hand plane. Every single sander out there will bog down if enough force is applied to it, as well. With this sander, you shouldn't even be applying any force to it. Just let the weight of the sander do the work for you, with very small amounts of even pressure here and there, if at all needed. People will inevitably use it for tasks it's not designed for, and thus give it a bad review. If you use it correctly, it will perform exactly how you would expect it to. I've used mine - as a finishing sander - every single day for the past year and a half and with a bit of unavoidable maintenance here and there, and it works just as well as the day I bought it. I've also used my higher powered belt sander for stripping and roughing now for around 6 years - nearly every single day. Still works - and it's a brand that's not nearly at the quality level of Bosch tools. It's all in how you use it - every tool has a specific task, and this tool does it's specific task very well. Very obvious analogy here, but you shouldn't use a wrench to cut your steak.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by mikewisc Great results from a well-made tool
I love this tool! It is well built and well designed. Feels very comfortable in the hands while using. Does not require much pressure at all (in fact, too much pressure actually makes it work less effectively). The dust collection is superb... I don't have to wear a mask. True, the dust box needs frequent cleaning, but it comes off with a simple grip and twist. The motor is powerful yet quiet. I sanded a small tool rack which I built with a 220 grit disk and the finish was superb. I own other Bosch tools and I'm sure I will continue to stick with this quality line. You pay somewhat more, but the quality is well worth it!

Just received the sander today and put it to use right away. I like the way the sander felt as I used it, not much vibration transmitted into my hands. The dust collector worked better than I thought it would. Seems to be well built, did not get hot after using for over two hours. Nice tool, glad to have it.

I now have 2 of these sanders. I bought 1 for wood working projects several years ago after I saw good ratings for its performance. It met my expectations with good sanding performance and good dust capture when connected to a vacuum system.
I had an older, off-brand sander I use for nasty jobs like sanding boat bottoms. That sander died and I had to put my Bosch into service. It performed well last year, but that sort of work fills the sander with dust and contaminants you can never get out. I was going to buy another off-brand sander, but the Bosch wasn't that much more expensive and now I have 2 - 1 for "clean" work and 1 for nasty work.

It sands, grips well, collects much of the dust, isn't too noisy, and doesn't make little curly scratches like some other sanders.

Fast and easy to use sander. Dust collection keeps work area neat, just need to empty it regularly.
