Customer Questions & Answers

Holes Too Large?

I bought this to drill some 1/2" holes in brick using a Bosch Bulldog rotary hammer. The holes are too large for a lead anchor that requires a 1/2" hole. The anchor just falls into the hole with no resistance and spins. I tried drilling a smaller pilot hole first but the result was the same. I ended up using a 7/16" drill and hammered the anchors in though this is really not the correct way to do this. I was drilling carefully to avoid wallowing out the hole. I hope a Bosch rep sees this post and can advise me on why this drill cuts the hole too large. If this is by design then I feel I wasted my money.
Asked by: zewkini
I have had the same experience with masonry bits and normally go one size down from the recommended fastener size due to the size of the carbide tip that most masonry drills use.

Customer Reviews

Bulldog 1/2 in. x4 in. x 6 in. SDS-plus Carbide Rotary Hammer Drill Bit is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent bit - even outlasted by cordless hammer drill! I recently built a concrete block wall and needed to drill a 1/2" hole through each block for rebar. I decided on this drill bit instead of the slightly more expensive 'Extreme' version and it handled drilling a 4" deep home in over 60 concrete blocks with ease. It was still going strong on the 60th block. Even though the drill bit has the special Slotted Drive System/SDS grooves in the end, I found that you can still use it in a regular drill chuck if you make sure the drill is centered properly in the chuck. I started off using the bit in my cordless 18V hammer drill and the cordless drill motor self destructed after about 45 blocks, so this $8 drill outlasted a $300 hammer drill!! I then switched over to a 110V corded SDS drill and it continued to eat through the remaining blocks with ease. Since each block was 4" thick and I drilled through 60 of them, I can safely say that this drill bit will drill through at least 20 linear feet of concrete with more to spare, so its good value for money for the average DIYer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Adequate The bit came with a rubberized coating over the tip but even through the coating I could see the dull edge. I used it in my hammer drill for about 50 holes in concrete. As you would expect it was slow but it held up fine and didn't get any worse. I have powerful drill and it would make a hole even if the bit was ground to a stub so I wasn't too worried about it. Even a sharper drill would have been dull after 10-15 holes anyway.
