Customer Questions & Answers

what is an sds hammer drill?

Asked by: Eddie
An SDS hammer drill uses a positive locking chuck, not a 3 jawed chuck. Drills with standard 3 jaw chucks tend to rip up drill shanks and jaws as the standard 3 jaws simply can not grip tight enough to keep bits from spinning in them under the conditions presented by hammer drilling. Standard 3 jaw chucks can be fine for drilling 1/4" holes in concrete. For holes over 1/4" an SDS or other positive locking chuck system is a must have for the professional.

Can you drill stone with these bits using a hammer-drill?

Asked by: pete
Yes, but the drill hole size rating for these drills is generally for concrete. Hard stone like marble, granite, quartz etc. can take far longer to drill than concrete ate they are far, far harder then concrete. It took me 2 hours to drill 8, 5/8" holes 1.5-2" into blue granite and I stripped a carbide insert from the first bit I used and had to use another to complete the process taking more time and care to insure that bit didn't crater too. I also used water to cool the bit as I was drilling.

Can you use these bits on marble?

Can you use these bits on marble?
Asked by: Badgerpolo
You can but the rating for the drill is through concrete. I have never drilled marble but I have drilled in blue granite. 8, 5/8" holes 1.5-2" deep took a few hours and trashed one premium quality bit. Slow and steady and just go at the tool's pace. Beating the dickens out of the drill and the bit will not make the task go any faster and will only shorten the life of the bit and the drill. I was drilling downward and used water to cool the bit.

Will the shank fit a standard 1/2" chuck?

Asked by: ken
You might be able to get that to work though expect it to not work for long. If you need a standard smooth chuch surface bit you should not use these. These are specifically designed to be used in hammer drills that are REAL hammer drills, not those low line wannabe drills that host a standard 3 jaw chuck. Those can be fine for holes up 1/4" in concrete, but in short order, will cost more in time and lobor than will be entailed in buying a REAL hammer drill with a positive locking chuck like the SDS systems use. The 3 "hammer" drils with 3 jawed chucks simply do not grip the bit tight enough resulting in slippage that tears up the bit shanks and the chucks themselves. As stated those, for holes up like 1/4" the lower line 3 jaw chucks can work fine in concrete. All bets are off on this when you are drilling hard stone like granite though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent starter for that price! I bought a new BOSCH RH328VC at Home Depot and they did not have this product in the store but it is available on line from Home Depot. I was pleasantly surprised how efficient and quick the order came in. I picked it up at a local Home Depot store nearby my home. Excellent product and naturally a good hammer/drill from BOSCH. Highly recommended!
