Answer:
A 1/4" pilot hole would help. Do not use this bit on boards less than 2" thick. Drill until the bit just breaks through the board, turn the board over and continue to drill from the opposite side.
This bit will have a very rough finish to the wood. The board should be secured (i.e., clamped, vised or nailed in place) when using this bit as the bit has a large bite into the wood. Have a strong hold on

Answer:
Thank you for your question. Our spade bits have a pilot point so there is not a need to drill a pilot hole. To start the bit be sure to depress the drill trigger switch slightly so that the bit slowly engages into the wood.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by above and beyond my expectations. This product was purchased for a build I was doing that involved boring holes through a 2x4 bed frame, to allow a rope light kit to be laced through. Giving the appearance of a floating bed. The spade bit ; because of its arched structure and threaded tip, cut through the wood like a hot knife through room temperature butter. I am very pleased thank H.D. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Like Lightning Worked great. Bored thru 2x4 quicker than a standard spade bit. I'll probably buy the full set. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Graco Airless paint After you get use to it, it works perfectly ! The instructions are easy to follow. June 3, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makes fast work of joists and studs This bit is very efficient and boring rough holes, perfect application for running wiring, etc. If you need a tidy and precise edge, use a standard spade. December 12, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by eh.... Worked well for the first 20 or 30 holes but then dulled up a bit and eventually got binded up and bent...at darn near 8 bucks for one bit(can only buy the inch &eight one at a time) I would have been better of with the standard paddle bit for less than half the price.....simply put not worth double the cost August 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by fast cutting tool this drill was really a fast cutting tool. it fit the bill for the application i needed it for. October 28, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Descent Bit Works well but has a different feel to a standard paddle bit. It starts great but progresses slower than a standard bit. Also if a nail is hit its done first time. December 17, 2013
