What power tool fits auger bits like this? I need to drill a 5/8" hole 7" deep into a tree and this would seem to be the bit, but it won't fit my old drill. Somebody recommended a Bosch hammer drill, but it has an SDS-Plus chuck so I assume that won't fit right. I'm trying to find the right power tool and bit to do this job.
Asked by: Phil
I used the Ridgid 8.5 Amp 1/2 in. heavy duty 2‑Speed hammer drill to drill similar holes and it fit the chuck fine. Note, this particular auger bit is so aggressive without adequate marital ejection that it ended up stuck in the post several times as I drilled through a 6" cedar fence post (see the graduated screw tip). I would not recommend this bit for that type of job, unless drilling soft pine or the like. Subsequent holes, I used a spoon bit. It removed less material per revelation, but did not bind, and therefore took less time to drill deep holes in harder wood. Just a tip.

Are there extensions for this bit and its 5/8" cousin (to make them longer)?

Asked by: PrunePruner
Thank you for your question. We do not offer extensions for the auger bits.

Daredevil 1-1/16 in. x 17 in. Tube Auger is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saves time and energy This bit was worth the price. I just finished a pavilion project with lots of pressure treated beams, columns, and headers. This bit drilled 100+ holes thru 6x6, 6x8, 2x12 headers sandwiched with 6x6. All the lumber was PT and all was green and wet. This bit pulled itself thru the wood quick and effortlessly. It made short work of a tough job. Be careful, you need to keep reversing the drill and pulling the bit out to clean it every few inches. If you don't, you'll bury the bit and never get it out.

Best auger out there, takes probably half the torque to drill deep holes compared to a conventional ship auger. After hitting about 20 nails they get a little dull, but are easily sharpened with a file. A m18 fuel drill will power one of these on an extension through two feet of wood.

I originally purchased this to drill holes through the stump of an Ash tree so that I could use fertilizer to speed up the decay of the stump. However, the bit kept getting caught and it wouldn't drill. I used a 20v DeWalt drill, so definitely the drill had enough power (also tried various gears). I returned it because it didn't work for the purpose I needed it for. I cannot recommend it as a bit to drill holes in a tree stump. I cannot say whether it is suitable for other purposes.
