Questions & Answers

What size pilot hole needed for this bit?

Asked by: Allen
I never need a pilot hole as it's self feeding with a sharp point.

Need to drill a hole in a log. The bit doesn't seem sharp enough, keeps getting caught. Is this the correct bit?

Asked by: Kelly
Use a fully charged battery in your drill or 110 v. drill. Sounds like lack of power driving the bit.

Plastic bucket

Would this cleanly drill through the bottom of one of the home depot 5 gal buckets?
Asked by: Snicker1979
Thank you for your inquiry. The DSB1019 spade bit is use only for wood applications. For plastic, we would recommend a black oxide or titanium bit for drilling plastic. For further assistance, contact us at 1-877-BOSCH99 (1-877-267-2499) from M-F 7a-7p CST.

Is this wide enough for 1.5" pvc pipe to fit after drilling?
Asked by: AJD
Thank you for the inquiry. If you will use same dimension of bit from the pipe it will not fit you need a wider bit to make sure that it'll work. For more details please contact 1-877-BOSCH99 (1-877-267-2499).

The bit powers through wood at an astonishing rate but it requires a drill that is capable of providing a good amount of torque and the drill must be held solidly. Most lightweight cordless drills are no good for a bit of this style. They just stall out.

Can't use this on standard 1x4 pine board... the MASSIVE threaded screw tip splits it right in half. Good thing I tested on a piece of scrap before I drilled and ruined my actual project piece. It may work well for blasting through rough framing where all the splits and gouges are hidden behind sheetrock or finish surfaces, but it's useless for anything delicate or on a finish surface. Innovation sometimes kills the function of tools. Ordering a traditional spade bit with a standard pointed head. So much for the "convenience" of purchasing at a local store.

Apparently Bosch, in their infinite something or other, have decided that everyone has always done spade bits wrong. You see, most companies put the spurs (which cut the edges of the hole) at the outside edges of the bit, where they can sever wood fibers cleanly before the cutting edge of the paddle scrapes out the chips. Someone at Bosch came up with a brilliant idea: They put the spurs INSIDE the diameter of the hole! At one stroke, they make the entry hole messier AND make sure the edges of the exit are terrible! Short version: these bits make some of the roughest holes I've seen, and after drilling about 40 holes in 2x4 pine studs the spurs are visibly worn down and the tip of the threaded part is worn dull, so it takes a fair amount of force to get it started. Spend your money on something else... even at two bits per package they're a waste of your money.

The tip of the bit is a screw that draws the bit into the wood without requiring pressure. But, if you want to drill a clean hole in a board with a backer board, you should first drill a 1/4" pilot hole so that the screw tip cannot engage and rapidly draw this bit through the wood.

I had ten holes to drill in the pressure treated post and it handled the last just as easy as the first. I had expected at the price point to throw it away afterwards but there appears to be a lot of life left in this bit. I would recommend it to everyone.

I purchased this bit exclusively to use to countersink some holes for large lag screws required on our sliding barn door, and was very disappointed. The bit kept locking up in 2 different drivers and the spiral screw tip in the center doesn't bore well at all. Shoulda used a Forstner Bit!

The threads pull the bit in quickly and it takes a big bite. I was using an older 3/8" drill putting holes in treated 4x4's and burned up the motor. I was able to finish the job with a newer 3/8" drill, but would recommend a 1/2".

Even in the drill press I was unable to control it. If you want a FAST and AGRESSIVE bit this is for you.
