Isn' t that odd this 14 piece set is showing as an accessory with a DeWalt Hammer Drill, but if ones read the instructions it is recommended to not these bits with a hammer drill; so, show these as accessories when ordering the DeWalt.

Went through 3 bits (the number of 1/4" provided) and over an hour trying to get four 1-inch deep holes to hang some signs. Gave up halfway through the 4th hole. Even changed to a completely charged drill battery halfway through. I've drilled into brick before, it shouldn't be this hard. I'm going to buy something else.

This review is for the Bosch model BM5000 Masonry Drill Bit Set which I was given a chance to check out. I’m not a pro, I’m a home-owner DIY’er, so this review comes from that perspective. I don’t do a lot of drilling into brick or masonry block but figured it would be good to have a set of bits on hand “just in case”. It’s important to note that these bits are the non-hammer version – they’re for use in a ‘regular’ power drill. I think the BM5000 kit should be considered to be, considering the market price, an "economy" line of bits. (I have individual bits in my basement shop that cost more than this entire set). Instructions for use of the bits is on the back label of the kit box. The instructions include starting the drilling slowly, and limiting the RPM to a maximum of 2000. The bits are made with a carbide tip, which adds life to the bit when drilling in brick and block. In operation I see no ‘run out’ on the bits I received, they turn straight and true. As far as penetrating power, I tried them in standard red brick and a cast concrete bird bath stand. I used a Ryobi drill from the drill/driver kit model # P1832, with the clutch set for drilling and the speed set to “1”. I figured if a low RPM was called for then this drill, not being overly powerful, would do nicely. Penetration in both the cast concrete and red brick was fine – I followed the instructions, drilling at a slow RPM while applying just enough pressure to keep the bit cutting away. Considering the low market price of this set of bits I admit I was pleasantly surprised at how well they worked. The set includes duplicates in the smaller popular sizes - (3) 1/8 in., (2) 5/32 in., (3) 3/16 in., (3)1/4 in., (1) 5/16 in., (1) 3/8 in., (1) 1/2 in. bits. The 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2 inch bits are sturdier and less likely to snap. The bits will fit into a 3/8” chuck. The bits come in a reusable plastic box that offers a hole for mounting on pegboard. Not a terrific storage box, but commiserate with the price point of the bit set. Home Depot offers their standard 90-day return policy on the drill bit set and, given my experience with bits and the low market price, I’m rating it as a five-star purchase. It isn’t the end-all / be-all masonry drill bit set but it’s nevertheless a handy set to have “just in case”. HTH Regards, Jim
