Answer:
you could in an emergency, but you will get black marks where the " snake" rubs against the bends. They make a hand auger for toilets. it is "L" shaped, with scrach protection at the end where it has to negotiate the bends. Also hand cranked, for less than $10.

Pjpar, thank you for your question.
This BrassCraft drum auger is not designed to clear clogged toilets and can scratch the porcelain toilet.
For toilets, we recommend using BrassCraft plungers or BrassCraft Toilet Augers that are designed specifically not to damage the bottom of the toilet. You can find this BrassCraft toilet auger along with BrassCraft plungers at your local Home Depot:

Hey pjpar,
As it states on the product overview: designed for most sink, shower and tub drains.
Since this is a small auger, and it didn't state to use it on toilets, it would be unwise to do so.
In fact, you'd need a fairly powerful auger for a toilet, and any 'snaking' or use of an auger ALWAYS requires you to remove the toilet first, and then feed the auger down the drain pipe.

Mbk9084,
Thank you for your question. If the overflow is between 1 in. and 2 in. in diameter than you can use this drum auger. If it is smaller, which some are, we would not recommend using as it could get stuck.

Answer:
Usually there is a tight bend just after the overflow opening as the drain tube follows the conture of the sink. So, probably not work on a sink. It might work in a bath tub overflow. The coil at the end of the "snake" is 1/2" dia. And when I make a tight bend in the snake it requires a 3" dia.

When snake has advanced pass the 6 inches of slack previously set, loosen screw again and leave slack again about 6 inches. Loosen screw, retract the snake back into the holder, hopefully you have cleared the clog or it will come out with the snake at the end of the auger.
Good luck. Not fun and will be messy. Read Less

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well if you are careful This is a no-frills pipe snake that works well if you are gentle with it. My advice: 1) Feed it slowly as you turn the handle counterclockwise in 1-foot lengths, using the thumbscrew to lock the line (turning counterclockwise will avoid snagging on the pipe wall). 2) Once you reach the clog, begin turning the handle clockwise as you feed it slowly forward. The loose coil at the front will now engage the clog. If the line begins to fold or coil, retract it a few inches and then slowly feed it forward again. 3) Continue feeding it forward until the clog is cleared, then slowly remove the line and manually re-insert it into the housing. 4) When you are done, extend and rinse the entire line with water, then leave it out to dry completely, or it will rust. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Auger rating This auger was not sturdy enough to get through a clog which was less than 15 ft from the entrance. It started twisting in the pipe and ended up getting bent and ruined before it got through. A total waste of $28 and another $140 when I had to get a plumber out. September 27, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Clogged AC drain line Used this to unclog an AC drain line and it did the job but had trouble with the end falling off. Other then that it was easy to use. September 27, 2016
