Answer:
you could in an emergency, but you will get black marks where the " snake" rubs against the bends. They make a hand auger for toilets. it is "L" shaped, with scrach protection at the end where it has to negotiate the bends. Also hand cranked, for less than $10.

Pjpar, thank you for your question.
This BrassCraft drum auger is not designed to clear clogged toilets and can scratch the porcelain toilet.
For toilets, we recommend using BrassCraft plungers or BrassCraft Toilet Augers that are designed specifically not to damage the bottom of the toilet. You can find this BrassCraft toilet auger along with BrassCraft plungers at your local Home Depot:

Hey pjpar,
As it states on the product overview: designed for most sink, shower and tub drains.
Since this is a small auger, and it didn't state to use it on toilets, it would be unwise to do so.
In fact, you'd need a fairly powerful auger for a toilet, and any 'snaking' or use of an auger ALWAYS requires you to remove the toilet first, and then feed the auger down the drain pipe.

Mbk9084,
Thank you for your question. If the overflow is between 1 in. and 2 in. in diameter than you can use this drum auger. If it is smaller, which some are, we would not recommend using as it could get stuck.

Answer:
Usually there is a tight bend just after the overflow opening as the drain tube follows the conture of the sink. So, probably not work on a sink. It might work in a bath tub overflow. The coil at the end of the "snake" is 1/2" dia. And when I make a tight bend in the snake it requires a 3" dia.

When snake has advanced pass the 6 inches of slack previously set, loosen screw again and leave slack again about 6 inches. Loosen screw, retract the snake back into the holder, hopefully you have cleared the clog or it will come out with the snake at the end of the auger.
Good luck. Not fun and will be messy. Read Less

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Did what I needed Simple to use. Cleared drain on second attempt. Was a no mess solution. August 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Decent auger I had been suffering from a very slow drain for months. Drano and coat hangers didn't do the trick. Rather than going to the expense ($$$) of getting a plumper, I wanted to try a cheap auger. I purchased this one and was pleased with the price, construction and quality. Given that this auger would only be used rarely (i.e. once you hope), then price and quality were relative. Instructions were easy to follow as I unhooked the under sink trap, inserted the auger line and proceeded to feed line and turn the handle. The auger worked clearing my drain of a mat of hair and other material. Drain is now free flowing and I couldn't be happier with the auger. April 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great! I was able to use this to clear a clogged washer drainpipe and it worked great! June 28, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It Helps it work perfect no complains. It can be a lit more flexible for curves or elbows. June 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Drum Auger It worked as expected. Cleared a nasty hairball a couple of feet into the wall. Although I knew I wouldn't need a longer 20' snake, I wish I had bought the next model up with the pistol grip and thumb lock. Would have been easier to operate. As is, a little bit of effort saved cost of a drain cleaning service May 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It worked! I had this sent to my son in San Francisco. I suggested he watch a YouTube video of how to use it and he reported that "it worked"!!!! May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Captured 2 foot hair-rat First use pulled out 2' long hair snake from shower drain. Product works. Don't think you need to spend more for units with side handle. The only challenge was removing the hairball from the snake tool. May 14, 2016
