This machine has forward and reverse, it also has a foot pad control (I often end up using my knee!) However, you need to use your hands to push the cable in and pull it out.

Answer:
Manually. You need to pull out or push the cable in by hand. However, less force would be used if you leave the motor running.

roots

This question is from 5/16 in. x 50 ft. Cable Drum Machine
April 24, 2014
Will this survive multiple uses with roots in a main line or would a more powerful machine be needed? I have to clean my lines about twice a year - when I call someone in, its the cost of this item so I figure this may be worth it (or a higher model if necessary)

I was able to clear small roots, and yes, you have to go slow, back up the line regularly, otherwise it'll just fold on itself (you can hear it: when you pull the line back you hear a sudden spring-like noise, whereas if the line isn't folded you just hear the regular rasping). But I would second that this machine isn't really meant for main drain (that's what I used it on, and the first time around, I completely folded the line without even noticing, but I tried again, fed the line super slowly, backing up regularly until it felt like I was hitting something, at which point I worked it even slower, and the clog cleared up. Found a bunch of small roots wrapped around the line when I pulled it out). Read Less

Answer:
I haven't cleared roots, but the manual indicates that it can clear small roots. You would have to go slow, though. But if it was me and I had to clear roots twice a year, I'd go another step up and get the heavy-duty Rigid tool, then you'd really have something.

Tuxthepenguin,
Thank you for your question.
This BrassCraft Power Drum Auger is designed to clear up small to medium size household drains like sinks, shower and tub, and it will not be effective on root blockages. For that you will need a machine with a higher HP and a thicker ¾- in. cable.
Please contact our Product Experts toll free at 800-835-2200 with any further questions on drain cleaning.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I live in a mobile home that has a very long run from the kitchen sink to the wastewater mainline and have trouble every couple of years with it plugging. from soap residue .I have always had to rent a machine to clean the line at a high cost for rental. It took me 5 minutes to clean the line with this little machine. Light and easy to carry and store. Rentals took two people to carry them. I would recommend this little machine to any home owner looking for one to use occasionally . October 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Worth it I've been using a manual 50' cable type snake for years and it took a toll on my hands when I had to turn it manually and it would always tend to kink as it went beyond 40'. I also have a 40' blade type and although it worked easier than the cable, my clog was just beyond it's reach so I decided to give in and get this guy. I wish I had done it years ago as it got to the clog and the washroom drain was opened in less than 30 minutes! For about what it would cost to call a commercial company to do the job AND I get to keep the machine for the next clog. Plus I got the 10% veterans discount! Just make sure you read the instructions carefully. August 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product at reasonable price! This is 50 ft. and includes cutting tools packet. Easy to use. one time cost and have it for future and to loan to family and friends. October 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It does the job. I have a repeated clog that occurs about 15 feet from the clean out. I paid 169.00 twice in the past 6 months to clear it. I picked this little gem up this morning. Put the tip on it, plugged it in and in 2 minutes I freed the clog. Do the math. I spent 272.00 with my VA discount, freed the clog and saved, do the math, I save 169.00. So how much did I pay for it now. I am keeping this little thing and happy I got it. I recommend this for small job around the house. I will not cut roots, but clogs, it does the job. By the way, I am a General Contractor and will be able to use this on my jobs. Just remember, don't abuse it, or you will be replacing it. July 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect machine for that little job This is that perfect little machine for those 50 ft and under jobs. August 23, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by snake It's ok for small jobs bit over priced. Has all the right features forward and reverse. Over all good for the home. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by cable drum machine worked good, no problems, good price, easy to carry around August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked as advertised, easy to use. I have to thank Roto Rooter for calling and missing their scheduled appt. We had them at the house one other time and as I watched the technician using a similar auger (obviously a more expensive version but same concept) it did not seem too complicated but was hesitant to try it myself. Because they could not make it this time I did some research on this tool and decided to give it a try. Within an hour of getting home from Home Depot my drain was running like new. Easy to use, and the cable and attachmeets seem to be durable and very high quality. Not sure how long attached drill will last but for home use that won't occur all that often this is worth the money. It will more than pay for itself in less than 2 visits from a plumbing service.
