This product has made grilling delightful. I have had the starter for over 5 years, it finally went out. It was a workhorse. I have not bought lighter fluid since I have had it. It worked perfect every time. It worked so well that all my friends had to have one after seeing how it works. Time to get another. It's well worth it.

IT WORKS!!! The Brinkmann Electric Charcoal Starter really is the quick and easy way to start charcoal without lighter fluid or matches. Makes me very happy because I don't like propane grills. You can't beat the flavor of charcoal or wood grilled foods! The starter arrived intact. Care was taken to insure it's safety. The instructions on the back of the package are thorough and easy to follow. The unit is somewhat larger than expected and our barbeque grill is smaller and square so we had to load the briquets differently than the instructions suggested but the starter still worked like a champ. It takes just eight minutes to get the charcoal going. The starter is well made, sturdy and easy to handle. The only drawback is the 2' cord. It's way too short to use without a three hole extension cord.. I am really happy with this product and hope it lasts for years.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by DallasGardener It does fire up the charcoal fast, but...
This electric charcoal starter really works for getting the charcoal started. It heats up fast and cools down pretty quickly. There is a built in metal fin that lets you set it aside when you're done and keeps the hot coil propped up to cool, I had worried about what do you do with a red hot heating element once the charcoal was lit. The first draw back is, its big. 17 3/4" from tip of handle to tip of the coil and it makes it a little cumbersome to place unless you have big grill. The second drawback is lugging up an extension cord to your grill and then putting it back for a 5 minute task. I also think the unit could use an on/off switch intead of plug it in and its working. If you are greatly bothered by charcoal lighter fluid smell or think it contaminates the food taste, this or a chimney tube for lighting charcoal may be the way to go.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by mrnuxi excellent tool for starting charcoal without chemicals
I have probably gone through two or three of these in the past five years. Since I hate using charcoal lighter fluid, this product is a far better alternative.
starts charcoal effortlessly w/o chemicals.
saves plenty of money over chemicals
1. cord is short (2 ft). I had to use an extension cord.
2. can break (metal fatigue?) in very cold weather -- so store in a heated area if used in winter.

We are a family that literally grills all of the time. This product is ideal for our needs. No more running out of starter products and having to stop and go back to the store. I wish I had thought of this earlier. I would recommend the Brinkmann Electric Charcoal Starter to anyone that loves a good grilled meal.

I got this electric charcoal starter to replace my chimney-style charcoal starter. The chimney worked fine, but the heavy smoke it created would drive my guests off the deck and into the house. I haven’t used lighter fluid or treated charcoal in many years because I’ve always felt that it imparts an odor to food being grilled. The electric starter overcomes both of these problems.
I was impressed the first time I used it. The directions say to leave it on the charcoal for 8 minutes only. I followed this exactly and it worked great. The coils turned cherry red in about a minute, which surprised me. The whole process went quickly. A couple of suggestions, though. You’ll want to first lay down a layer of charcoal on which you set the starter, and then pile the remaining charcoal on top. Also, you’ll need to pile the charcoal to one side of the grate so that the starter can lay flat and keep the plastic handle away from the heat. After the charcoal started I used a poker to spread it evenly on the grill grate. The only slight negative is that I needed to use an extension cord since the cord on the starter is quite short. Overall I’m very pleased with this product and would recommend it to others.
