I bought this to give one more dynamic layer of functionality to my dual propane/charcoal grill I had recently purchased at HD. Used it for the first time on a 13 lb turkey the other day, and it produced both a more enjoyable "active" smoking experience for me and a wonderful turkey after ~ 7 hours of smoking. While you can use the charcoal bay to smoke meats, I think the off-set firebox produces a more flavorful meat and an easier means to maintain a lower temp/slower smoking process. My Brinkmann now can do it all!

If you own the Brinkmann Dual Function Charcoal/Gas grill, this is a must buy accessory. Assembly is quick and easy. I have used it three times now and have been very satisfied with its performance. Other reviews have mention problems with the paint, but I have experienced no cracking or peeling of the finish. I love to grill, and this smoker makes the Brinkmann Dual Function grill the best grill I have ever owned.

Smokes exactly like I'd hoped it would! Have had the dual function grill for several years but had only used it as a charcoal grill (with the gas side being a convenient shelf for supplies while cooking.) After replacing the grill due to storm damage we decided to add the smoker. Just incredible tasting meat off of it! I've used a charcoal base with hickory chunks on round steak (that came out tasting exactly like brisket both times), whole chicken, flat iron steaks, and beef ribs. There is some discoloration (from smoking) on the smoke stacks of the charcoal side but I've found that washes off easily. So far I've only noticed the smoke discoloration on the firebox too.
Love the looks of 3 barrels side by side on my patio.
One bit of advice on the install- don't rush it. Make sure you have the lower bracket installed correctly before doing the set screws on the box to save the time of redoing it.
Another word of advice, get the Brinkmann suggested cover Brinkmann Model # 812-9097-S. Ours was always covered prior to adding the firebox but went thru a couple rain storms without a cover and got pretty wet inside.

I have yet to see any paint flaking off of this thing like many others have stated, and I fail to see how that is even possible. The firebox works awesome and really keeps the chamber at 250 degrees with just a little fiddling with the vent. The only thing I think that needs to be redesigned is the lid to the box, maybe put a latch on there or something. I always get the impression it is not closed enough even though it amazingly is.

The fire box was very easy to assemble and is a great accessory to my grill. We really enjoy it and use it 3 to 4 times a week.

I use it as the sole heat source when smoking (Jerk pork/chicken, chicken, ribs, shrimp, steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, you name it) in the main compartment and only use real wood or real charred wood.
It has held up fantastically. I occasionally cook side items in it while smoking such as my roasted corn (which adds great flavour to the meat).
I have not had any of the problems of which others have spoken. my paint is fine, my handle is fine.
I keep my gas side kosher for fish, (I have many kosher relatives and friends including Jews, Muslims, SDA and Rastafarians), and other kosher/parve items.

I bought the Gas & Charcoal Pit and also added the Smoker Box to burn my wood for smoking. Tried it out for the first time and I found that controlling the temperature was easier than the instructions I read.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by cmill Not sure how much longer it will hold up?
I have to say, I wish this was made a bit better. I have only used it for one season, but its already rusty, and I always keep it covered. The handle always comes loose and why they put plastic on the air vent handle is beyond me?? The first time I used it, it melted all over the vent, and it took me two hours to remove it. Because the metal is so thin, it looses a lot of heat, and warp letting the heat escape even faster. I guess this would be an ok starter fire box for someone just starting out, but if you are someone who has some experience smoking meats, look for something else. I really don't know if this will make it through another season??
