Product information refers to towing with lawn mower or garden tractor. I assume you could use an atv for towing?

Asked by: Anonymous
I have used mine with an ATV and it worked fine. I have a speedometer, so I keep the ATV in low gear and stay at 3 mph or less and it works well. The hitch on my ATV is higher than on a lawn tractor, so the spreader does sit a bit higher at the hitch, but this does not seem to impact how well it works

I have a zero turn cub cadet mower-can I USE and when I stop will the fertilizer continue to run out the bottom since I cant reach the lever

Asked by: fiscis1
Just bought this unit and yes it will work behind a zero turn mower. I have a Country Clipper model: The Boss and works just fine provided you don't turn to sharp. I also modified mine by putting the two clevis halves (top and bottom) both on the bottom of the tow tube flat side down so that it will ride on top of hitch on the mower and not pinch when turning. As far as the product flow the answer that Brinly posted is correct the product should not flow till you take off again.

Customer Reviews

125 lb. Tow-Behind Broadcast Spreader is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 90.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seed/Fertilizer Spreader Purchased this spreader to replace a spreader I had for 14 years. The only problem with my old spreader was corrosion. Have looked at several different brands to find the one that would best fit my needs. Assembly was very easy and only took about 45 minutes. Had read many reviews about this spreader and found one concern that was mentioned several times was an easy fix. The problem mentioned was the flow gate closing during use. All you have to do is tighten the bolt that holds the lever a little tighter. It has a spring in the assembly that is for adjustment of tension that will, prevent this from happening. You can make the lever as tight or loose as you prefer. Glad I purchased this as corrosion should not be a problem with this spreader.

I bounced back and forth between the assembly instructions and the assembly video on this website. I bought the spreader at 3PM and had 200 lbs of fertilizer out by 7pm (with 40 min drive time). The packaging of nuts, bolts, washers, and such were shrink wrapped and laid out in a logical fashion which made sense when assembling by the steps in the manual. I had never heard of nor had a Brinly-Hardy. I have used John Deere and Agri-Fab and this one seems much better constructed with quality parts and sturdy materials. The spreader scattered the fertilizer evenly and had a nice circular pattern. I feel this one will last longer than the others. The enclosed gearbox is a big plus. This will probably be my go to brand now especially since its made in the USA. I feel proud to have a quality product made in our country at a reasonable price.

The spreader is relatively easy to assemble, but if you are in a hurry you can get parts turned around easily. Don't think you can assemble this without the instructions! The construction is solid and sturdy, The wheelbase is wide enough so that is does not want to tip on corners. The hopper is large enough to handle product for about a half acre. The right to left spread adjustment works well, so you can get up close on either side without broadcasting to the opposite side. Nice feature. All in all, I think this a good value for the dollar.

The unit was not very easy to put together and had to enlarge the opening for the lever as it was so tight the arm did not move very easily. Additionally the plate that actually throws the seed/fertilizer/etc is not the best idea I have seen. since it is not secured to the shaft it moves up and down changing the way the product is dispersed. Overall I am not happy given the cost of this unit and that it is cheaply made. The Home Depot version comes with plastic wheels, this is sad given the cost. My old Craftsman has metal wheels and still works despite age taking a toll on the hopper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fertilizer Spreader Had to assemble. No big deal as the directions are excellent. Gate opening control handle is flimsy, but managed to use it without destroying it. Need to be careful with flow rate. As with all of these things, the rate is "approximate". When I used the recommended opening, it REALLY dumped a lot of material. But I was watching, adjusted it to a much slower rate and it worked fine. Got the job done. Did a pretty good job. Only took a few laps to figure it out. You really can reach the controls from your mower's seat. I'm glad I bought it, but I'll treat it with kids' gloves. Should last a long time as nothing that touches the fertilizer is metal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice spreader Did a lot of research prior to buying this spreader. Very pleased with the purchase. Spread fertilizer very evenly. Very solid. I have a pretty hilly yard and it was not tippy at all. I did read in several reviews that the it tends to vibrate shut during use. I have used it to spread 3 bags of fertilizer and it did tend to vibrate shut on me. I did see some diy fixes that others have used but have not had the time to try it out. A bungy cord worked for me. Even with that issue, I feel for the price it is a great unit. I like the large capacity. I put in two 50 pound bags of fertilizer and it handled it no problem. I would recommend.
