The tires are pneumatic. The wheel hub may be metal or composite. The composite hub seems pretty strong.

The spreader fan is made of heavy molded nylon. Metal spreader fans lose their paint and then rust rather quickly.

Answer:
no, I bought 7cu yards of the fine compost from St Louis compost and it was too thick and kept clogging the hole. The hole is actually really big and I thought it would have no problem but it would not throw it at all.

This unit is not recommended to spread compost. It could flow through if it was the consistency of rock salt or finer, but wouldn't spread very well at all.

175 lb. 3.5 cu. ft. Tow-Behind Broadcast Spreader is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Took some time to assemble the spreader. This was a replacement for one just like this purchased ... Took some time to assemble the spreader. This was a replacement for one just like this purchased several years ago. Spreader is used hard, spread feed for critters almost every day, so I eventually wear them out. Like the 175 lb. size.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works I just used it once and the 4star rating is because the flow control handle tends to drift close. Will work on that when it gets warm and update review.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality construction. Not totally pleased with spreading action. Had trouble fitting the pin through the axle and hub during assembly. The two would not line up properly. Had to expand the hole in the hub a slight amount to get them to line up. Added about 30 minutes to the assembly process, which otherwise would have been easy, with excellent instructions. The lever that opens the spreader does not work exceptionally well, wanting to vibrate closed, especially at lower settings. Had to attach a bungee cord to hold onto to keep tension on the lever so it would stay open. Did not get even application because of this. These issues aside, the spreader is very sturdy and well consructed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Spreader This is a good spreader BUT, the bin needs to be redesigned to allow all of the product to easily flow down to the bottom in order to exit. Too much gets hung up on the sides of the spreader bin and you have to stop the tractor/mower several times, get off and manually push the product down to the exit hole. A larger agitation pin would help too but that alone would not solve the problem. Could you design an insert to place in the bottom of the bin to correct the problem in my spreader? It is a problem irritating enough that I would even pay a LITTLE extra to get one. Thank you, An almost satisfied customer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big spreader Assembly was easy, the fan had one of the fins broken upon opening the box, I called the brinly-hardy number from the manual and they sent me a new one no questions asked. The tub on this holds a ton of seed, don't be fooled by the pics. It was way bigger than I thought once I opened it. It worked good and threw the seed out great, just make sure it isn't too windy or the seed will blow out the bottom even faster.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not great quality Some parts are really sturdy, some not. Tips over easily when a full load is used. Transmission drive slips sometimes when a full load is used causing nylon gearing to wear and need replacing. Adjustment for rate does not hold even when tightened a lot. Adjustment lever has a tendency to close when in use. Hitch assembly is thin metal and distorts very easily. However, it is the best product on the market for the price and replacement parts are relatively inexpensive. I think you could build one by ordering the parts separately and come out about the same price as the whole unit kit, not typical for most things.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cheap Imitation of Earlier Model This is a nice little spreader that I use for small projects around my various orchards. I bought my first one a couple of years ago and am trusting that this second one will work just as well. I was very unhappy to find two sets of assembly instructions in the box. One set was identical to my first spreader, the other one involved cheaper components such as plastic wheels. I'd have purchased the real version direct from the manufacturer if the Home Depot web site had specified that they were selling some sort of knock-off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good product Delivery was prompt but was received received damaged call the manufacturer and explain the problem there are support was excellent and replace the damaged part it was somewhat difficult to assemble but it works very good
