Product Overview

The Brinly 42 in. Lawn Sweeper is a tow-behind tractor attachment that collects leaves and grass clippings into its high-capacity 20 cu. ft. hamper. The 5:1 gear ratio results in higher tip velocity, generating more force to lift leaves and debris up off the ground and into the hamper. Consistent brush to ground contact prevents the unit from “skipping” and passing over sections of leaves and grass clippings on the lawn. By incorporating 6 brush sections, brush to ground contact is significantly improved over traditional 4 brush designs. This is accomplished by reducing “Tip Lift” the time and distance that the brushes lift off the surface of the lawn between strokes. When not in use, the patented self-storing feature allows the unit to be stored upright to minimize the required storage space. Stop raking and put your mower to work with the Brinly 42 in. Lawn Sweeper.

  • Full-swing hamper with pull cord and T-handle for easy dumping
  • 42 in. sweeping width, 20 cu. ft. hamper capacity
  • Patented upright self-storage feature
  • Durable tubular steel frame
  • Universal fit
  • Hitch pin included
  • Assembled dimension: 50 in. W x 53 in. D x 26 in. H

Plastic stripped gears

Brinly states that there are two gears on each side. One plastic and one metal. Many reviewers complain of the plastic gears stripping. Brinly states that this is not a common problem yet MANY different site reviews mention it. The plastic gears are designed to ensure obsolescence so their failure is no surprise. My question to Brinly is, can a consumer upgrade to all metal gears? Do you intend to fix this problem and eliminate gear stripping? Fixing it after the sale deters me (and probably many others) from purchasing the product.

This is common. Happened to mine twice in just over a year. I am buying a different brand that does not mix metal gear with plastic wheel.

Interesting no response from Brinly! Had one company say that the plastic on metal gears was Industry standard. How about Brinly taking a step above Industry standard and produce a product that the consumer will flock to too make a purchase and leave their competitors behind.

That's a good point! They should have used all metal gears in the first place.
I've got to tell you though, I've used mine a lot and I haven't had any problems so far although I know it's inevitable. But like any mechanical device, you have to take care when using it or parts will fail prematurely. Has anybody used this sweeper with a zero turn? Will it pick up at the faster speeds and will it make the sharp turns?

Answer:
The Brinly Hardy Sweeper is designed for standard garden tractors. Towing speed at 3-5 miles per hour. Sharp turns could damage the gears or the frame of the unit.

Answer:
It will pick up at high speeds but the debris will fly right over the hamper. It does not do well on sharp corners. It works best at medium speed.

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 82 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by NOT for ZERO TURN USE!!!!!!!!! (useless you go real sloooooow!!!) Purchased from Home Depot 24 April 2016. Used 4 times between 24 April- 23 May 2016. Out of town (Not used) from 23 May to 15 August 2016. Used 4 times August 2016. Total times used was 8. Lot size one acre. Plastic wheel gear stripped out on right side of sweeper. Contacted Brinly-Hardy Co. customer service. Brinly-Hardy Co. customer service asked what type of mower I was using. I use a Cub Cadet ZTR 42S tractor (purchased from Home Depot). The product was out of warranty (90 days for gears and wheels) NOT 2-years as identified on the web site, read the fine print, lesson learned!. Since I was utilizing my zero turn tractor, I was going too fast and turning too sharply causing the wheel to lock during the turn and the brush with the steel gear was still turning which caused the plastic wheel gear to strip. Brinly-Hardy Co. customer service stated that since the sweep was new but out of warranty they would discount the wheel, normally $40.43 to $26.28 plus $15.00 shipping. I was told that in the manual there is reference to maximum towing speed and avoid sharp turns. (In my future purchase of a zero turn tractor I'll make a note to purchase one with a MPH gauge???.) Bottom Line Do not use with a Zero Turn Tractor! Home Depot should advise the potential purchaser that this sweeper is NOT intended for zero turn tractors as they go too fast and turn to sharply. $269.00 and another $41.28 for 1/2 season of use. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Room for improvement Parts didn't match well during assembly. Hamper assembly instructions where vague. The design engineer that chose to only have one wheel sweeper drive should be fired it has a tendency to skip the wheels and not sweep plus who really sweeps backwards both wheels should have been driving the sweeper during forward motion. If you're not a mechanical person just let the dealer assemble it for you. August 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this product The sweeper was much more difficult to assemble then I expected. I was fortunate to have a neighbor that helped me put this thing together as it really takes two people to do and the instructions are inadequate to say the least, good thing for Youtube I found a video that showed me how to assemble the sweeper. That being said once I had it assembled I used it right away and I love it. It has a lever that enables you to set the brushes at various levels so it can be used to pick up grass clippings, leaves etc.... It is of high quality and you can empty the grass clippings or leaves easily by pulling a nylon cord that attaches to the back of your tractor via a velcro handle. I will never have to rake leaves again. Another great feature is that it can be stored in the winter by removing the tension rods that hold it up so once you remove the rods it collapses and can be stored for next season taking up a small space in my garage. Bottom Line I love this product and highly recommend it. August 31, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Incorrect instructions and more This lawn sweeper took 2 college-educated mechanically-inclined people over 4 hours to assemble--and it still isn't totally assembled. The instructions were confusing and incorrect. The parts did not fit together--had to drill additional holes in 2 places. Haven't used it yet obviously. August 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great value and cuts my work down! Love this sweeper! Easy to assemble, I recommend an air wrench for adjustments to height as I am sure they used one to initially assemble. Mowed the day prior to purchase and it rained this sweeper easily picked up the wet grass. No more raking or trying to mow-blow!! August 2, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Can HARDLY wait till Fall (leaves) Assembly was 'OK', but the instructions could be tweaked a little. From the initial LOOKS of the sweeper, I assumed every little bit would be 'captured' and flung into the bag, but I'm now thinking my expectations were a bit high. It 'sweeps' 'OK', but what impressed me the most, was the EASE of dumping the debris. THOUGHT I would have to struggle with the weight, but, the sweeper is balance to the point that it was very easy to dump. NOTHING really negative to say - I'm just a Perfectionist. June 1, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great lawn sweeper but?? Directions for last steps for catch basket very hard to follow. I finally brought it back to HD and had their lawn installation team finish the build. Staff at HD had it ready the next day. I along with two mechanics could not figure it out. Thanks HD Has great pick-up (grass & leaves) easy to tow and dump. June 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Annoying instructions, good sweeper. The instructions correspond nicely with the shrink packed nuts, bolts, and washers. Then suddenly the instructions get very vague and all of section # 8 of the equipment is skipped. Save yourself the frustration and watch the YouTube video from Brinly (Brinly STS-427LXH Lawn Sweeper Assembly) for clarification. Once it was put together the sweeper did a great job on my 1.5 acre property. It doesn't do corners well due to the lack of speed to spin the brushes. Overall my lawn looks much better after using this sweeper. May 15, 2016
