Do the louvers operate independently or are they joined with some kind of metal wire device?

Do the louvers operate independently or are they joined with some kind of metal wire device? I'd be using these in an unconventional way, on a porch, is why I ask. I'd love it if the louvers were rigged to all work together so I could manually open and close the vents.
Asked by: studiopop
. I bought this window at Home Depot and had to return it because the louvers open independent, while that NUTONE said that the Model 433 are joined together. Even I called NUTONE (1-800-558-1711) and they informed me that do not have any model in the louvers are together.

Hello, how big will the CUT OUT hole be for this vent?

Product #433 Broan louver says its 16.75in x 16.75in... i just wanna make sure that when I cut my hole into the side of my house that I dont cut it to big and the louver just falls through the hole. So i need to know the size of the CUT HOLE in order to make sure the the edges can be screwed down. Thanks

The vent is about 1/2" smaller than the rough-in size, depending on the type of siding you have and whether you intend to put trim around it, the size in the instructions may work for you. If you only want to run a bead of chalk around it when finished, I would go with 16.5"x 16.5". I made my opening prior to receiving the vent, used James Hardie plank siding, and put a small trim piece around the vent and butted the trim to the siding.

Do the louvers go inwards to the attic?

Is this an intake vent and do you have it in a 12"x12" or 14"x14"
Asked by: Ray
Thank you for your questions. The louvers open outwards (to the outside). This is not an intake vent. This would be used with a cable fan that moves air out when in operation. While air is needed inside, this is not the intake. To be sure that your questions are properly answered, I would encourage you to contact our Technical Support Department at 888-336-6151 and speak with them directly. Thank you.

Can I mount this like a gable vent, in that it will open when I turn on my whole house fan?

In other words, I want to use it without any ducting, or a dedicated fan to blow it open, just as an attic vent, mounted in a gable, to open when the whole house fan turns on. Thanks!
Asked by: Jose995
Yes, this vent does not need to be connected to a duct.

16.75 in. x 16.75 in. Aluminum Automatic Gable Square Mount Louvered Shutter Attic Vent is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality Purchased for a shop squirrel cage fan. Unit has a fairly stout frame but needs to be sealed at corners and particularly at bottom or it will leak if exposed to weather. Frame also comes with pre-punched mounting holes that are ridiculously large, 1/4" x 1/2". This is larger than any pan head screws available at HD. Unit shipped to me had one vane that would not close completely and could not be completely fixed because one pivot end pin (which are friction fit and can not be removed) was not put in straight. My biggest objection is the vanes themselves are very flimsy. All vanes came fairly straight at top but all had curve at bottom which meant none close very well, with a gap in middle from 1/8" to 1/2". This unit will not keep out blowing snow or driving rain and should be re-designed and subject to better quality control.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product. Works well. But, not perfect Product works well and is easy to install. Louvers are light weight, so the air from my attic fan easily opens them. They also close quietly, again because they are light. All is aluminum, so they won't rust. My biggest problem was that the aluminum frame did not meet soundly in the mitered corners. There was a gap on each corner that would allow water to infiltrate if the vent is mounted so it is exposed to wind and rain. I used angle aluminum screwed on the outside of each corner to narrow the gap, then caulking to seal them. In the end it seems fine, but did require extra, unexpected effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Louvered shutter I installed this along with a new fan in my garage roof gable. Works alot better than the fixed vent I had. I would like to do the same to the house gable vent but I am concerned about birds and squirrels being able to gain access to the attic so I would add a wire screen to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from EXHAUST LOUVER Installed with attic exhaust fan to relieve heat from my garage. Seems flimsy but when installed correctly everything tightens up. Functions as designed. 20 degrees cooler in garage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product! Product is good and would recommend it. You'll have to caulk the corners but that's no big deal (few gaps). Be-careful when handling due to it can be bent. I bent mine while screwing it to fan shroud but it was easy to re-straighten back out. I used mine for a solar attic vent. The fan I bought had a 20 watt solar panel which is not really strong enough to push the louvers completely open so I would recommend using a 40 to 60 watt solar panel. I went ahead and bought a 60 watt solar panel and it blows the lovers wide open! When using a solar fan, you have to keep in mind part of the pressure from the fan has to have enough force to push open the louvers and this will cause the fan to run a bit slower so that is why I recommend the larger wattage for solar use. If you are handy, you can buy a car radiator fan for $50.00 from online auto store, then buy a 60 watt monocrystalline solar panel for $105.00 at amazon. Find a remote controller from attic breeze or some other place and you're all set! Why spend $$$ when you can do it yourself!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Gable mounted louvered shutter This unit seemed to be very well built but after further inspection and installation I found it to be flimsy. I feel it could have been a bit more sturdy. After installation, which was done per instructions, I found that it doesn't close properly, the aluminum shutters are just too light in construction to weigh themselves closed when fan is not operated.
