Just bought the grill and was wondering if you can put lava rocks on top of the metal sheet that protects the burners from flare ups?

Answer:
Correction to my previous answer - the instruction say do NOT use lava rocks. I don't, and don't notice a difference in flair ups vs. other BBQs that had rocks. It may actually be better.

Sure - but not sure about warranty. I use without rocks. First time I have had a BBQ without rocks, and I am fine with it.

Answer:
Yes, but you should get an extra set of expandable grates to cover your burners that will hold the rocks above them and the grates that come with your grill. Haven't tried it, but researched it with another grill and it should be possible.

Answer:
Hi Josh, unfortunately we no longer have BBQs that are compatible with the lava rocks. Our Flav-R-Wave system replaces the old lava rock system. It does not need rocks on top of the Flav-R-Wave. Please call us at 1-800-265-2150 if you have any further questions!

No, they are permanently attached. If you look at the assembly instructions that you can download on the Home Depot page, you can get an idea of how it is designed.

You can remove them, but the supports are not removable or foldable so it would not save any space.

Answer:
No, the shelves are not foldable. You can remove the resin portion of the shelf, however the support arms are part of the leg (it's an 'L' shaped assembly) so removing them wouldn't really gain anything.

Does this unit get hot enough to "sear" a steak?

This question is from Cast Aluminum Reddi-Bilt 2-Burner Propane Gas Grill

The problem I've experienced in the past with previous gas grills, is they didn't get hot enough to sear a steak or a hamburger for that matter. I'm looking at the reviews for this on here and on other sites and there mostly positive. I was thinking that 40,000 btu's isn't all that much, but for the cooking area size of the grill, it might be ok. I am also thinking of a gas grill with a "sear" feature, but most of what I've found are located in grills much larger in size than this one. Any thoughts?

Answer:
Yes, definitely. I close the lid, put both burners to max, then when the thermometer hits max (I think 700F) I sear, let cook for 6 minutes with the lid open, and sear the other, and continue.

Answer:
The bbq should heat up to 700 degrees within about 10 minutes. That's an oven temperature. The actual temperature at the cooking grids is likely a couple hundred degrees higher. That is more than sufficient to sear a steak.

On the Broil-Mate grill, model 165154, where exactly is the drip container wire hung?

I'm not sure where to place the wire hanger for a (self-supplied) drip can and don't want to find out the hard way where the grease accumulates and drips from. A specific description would be helpful.

In the center hole, that is where it fits. The grill body drains to the middle where the center hole was provided for the drip can.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 57 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great value Easy to assemble with step by step visuals, which surprised me because during my research other online comments were critical of the assembly instructions. Perhaps the company has improved the directions? Took me about an hour and a half without assistance. Parts fit together excellently and the barbeque started on the first few clicks of the electric ignitor (even included the AA battery). Not sure about the accuracy of the thermometer gauge, but may buy a digital one to make sure. September 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Solid value! This is a good BBQ for the money. The BBQ has a fairly even heat distribution and the bowl, cover and grills are sturdy. However, there were some problems: 1. I agree with other reviewers that the instructions are awful - assembly took far longer than it should have (and involved a lot of cursing :). The four cotter pins were not included so I had to be creative and use bent nails instead. 2.The igniter does not work. (It seems every BBQ I've purchased over the years has had a wonky igniter so I've long ago resigned myself to using a butane lighter to start BBQs.) 3. The warming rack kept slipping out of the holes until I fashioned clips to keep it in place. July 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by great grill I was nervous based on others reviews about this grill. We purchased in December so are just trying it out now. So far everything has gone smoothly from assembly, customer service, and usage. The grill assembled in about 1 hour with 2 people. There was one plastic piece that was broken upon arrival and customer service made it easy to replace it for free. Everything has worked well on it so far. We've been really so far. May 30, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Worst instructions ever! Bought this this morning. I am 76 and have purchased many bbqs over the years. This has the worst instructions I have ever seen. In the end the front panel never was installed as the instructions for it were on the last page and the BBQ would have to be dismantled. The list of materials should have been put at he beginning to see if all were sent. There were no instructions for installing the igniter. Have fun with this one if you have not put one together before. I have parts left over and have no idea where they should go. May 22, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Half price and half quality I bought this for a large event I'd hosted. Price was great, assembly was fine. The grill is ok, but the handle becomes too hot to touch during use. The frame is terrible; when moved it rattles enough to shake nuts loose. Buy 1/4-20 and 10-24 lock washers and use them (and better tires if you can find them). June 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Value I bought this BBQ 6 years ago from Home Depot. This is the best BBQ for the money. I've replaced the burner only once, and the top rack once. The bottom rack now is starting to rust through and a second burner is now required. Not bad, considering we use the BBQ all year long, including the winter. The frame and aluminum casing are both in great condition. I will replace the parts and keep using this BBQ for many more years to come. It should last another 4 years at least. April 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Super Value Solid Basic Grill With very limited use to date, this grill provides ease and cooking as good as the $400 grill I also use for half the price. I think this grill will provide long service as it is well constructed ( I assembled it) and is a super value at $200. April 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by In complete out of the box Purchased two weeks ago, emptied the box , began assembly only to find the flav-r-wave is missing... kind of important. Now to see how Home Depot and OMC resolve the problem... may have to pack up and take it back.. April 21, 2016
