Putting next to worn hardwood that needs refinished

I have pre-existing hardwood that will surround this new hardwood. It is the same type but 14 years old. Is it better to refinish that before putting this down to look uniform or to not use this prefinished and just get unfinished and then redo all of the floors? I am trying to save money and time but want it to look uniform.
Asked by: Becky
If you are refinishing, I would suggest you used unfinished and sand all at the same time.

Can these be sanded and stained a different stain color?

Asked by: Mojo
Why not buy the unfinished, sand and then choose the stain you like. Test your stain on a scrap piece of floor and decide that's the color you like before finishing the entire floor

Do i need to use a flooring pad before installation?

Asked by: alig
No pad, but roll out building paper over the wood sub-floor; I used old-fashioned tar paper, with great results. Overlap the paper by a few inches. This product is for installation over a wood floor with floor joists running perpendicular to the planks.

American Originals Brown Earth Red Oak 3/4 in. Thick x 2-1/4 in. Wide Solid Hardwood Flooring (20 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 47.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Client was very unhappy with product quality Im a contractor and i bought this product for one of my customer. After the installation the customer moped the floor with a swiffer mop it was getting all stuck on a lot of splinter on the edges. Clien complains they can't even walk barefoot on the floor due to the splinters. She is really unsatisfied. I went to Home Depot and bruce, they just keep sending me back and forth to each other, neither of them try to do anything to help me resolve this problem. If could rate zero stars I would have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This flooring still looks fastastic after over 10 years! I installed this natural red oak flooring in my 13' x 15' dining room over ten years ago and it still looks new, like I installed it yesterday! Extremely satisfied with this flooring and its durable hard finish. I used tar paper and a Bostitch pneumatic 15.5-Gauge flooring stapler with 1/2 inch x 2" staples. All you need to do is position the stapler against the edge of the flooring and give it a whack with the rubber-head hammer that comes with the nailer, and it pulls the flooring strip tight as it drives the staple. Took only 1 day, and this was the first time I had ever installed wood flooring.

My existing red oak floors were 10 years old and wood tends to get warmer in color as it ages, so I wasn't sure if this would blend well but I was able to mix and match enough pieces in this case to create a seamless blend with my existing floor. A couple of the pieces had missing grooves which I would have been upset about if I expected to use the entire case.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Garbage Ordered 8 boxes of 2.5" and 16 boxes of 3.5". Returning all 24 boxes. Tongues are damaged, none of the boards are uniform in length. Went through all the boxes I ordered. More than 1/2 the wood is unusable. Huge waste of time. See photo of incomplete tongues and wood failing to lineup because they are not uniform in width.

My wife and I absolutely love it. This was my first time installing real hardwood, i have done a lot of laminate flooring, but this was easy. The only downside was the defective pieces, but i was able to put them in other areas where they were less noticeable, they say to get 10% more for cutting, but i had very little waste.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Went down easy, had minimal "cull boards", but did run into a few in one of the boxes that did not have the fm groove on the end of the boards. If you run into that, Set those aside for end peices and your fine. Finish is nice and does not seem to scratch easily under normal conditions installing or after a few weeks of medium/large dogs running around. Wife happy, life happy

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good match to our original oak hardwood floors We installed these oak hardwood floors in the kitchen and dining room of our 1966 ranch that came with original oak hardwood floors in the adjacent front room. The new oak was a very close match to the original oak. The new floors have a glossy finish that we hope will dull with time, but otherwise they look great. Installation was typical. Nail down T&G. We used a felt/tar paper between the plywood subfloor and the new hardwoods. Some of the new planks were curved, but none were cupped. Sometimes the tongue or groove wouldn't be 100% but since they are genuine wood - you get some imperfections. We had ordered 10% more than we needed to account for this and it wasn't a problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from patch work I had an area on the kitchen floor to fill during a kitchen remodel. The original cabinets were built-ins, so no flooring under them. I bought the natural oak coming the closest in finish to orig. I only needed 1 box to build the floor where the cabinets were. They are not a perfect match. That's ok. It will be hidden with stove and fridge.
