Answer:
No pad, but roll out building paper over the wood sub-floor; I used old-fashioned tar paper, with great results. Overlap the paper by a few inches. This product is for installation over a wood floor with floor joists running perpendicular to the planks.

Answer:
Yes that is possible, but it would make far more sense to buy unfinished oak and not his product if you want to sand it and restain it.
The major advantage of this product is that is already coated with a very hard factory finish that would be difficult if not impossible to apply in the home.

Answer:
Yes, although it would be difficult. One would have to completely remove the finish and to do that, it would have to be sanded enough to remove the microbevel. So, it would most likely have to be sanded after installation, then stained, and then a new clearcoat would have to be applied.

When installing, you layout the planks ahead of where you are stapling them, and by doing this, you make sure you don't use up all the short boards and are are left with only long ones, and vice versa. The ends of the plank are grooved and notched to interlock the ends together in a tongue and groove fashion. You don't want to cut the end of a plank and create a butt joint. When you reach the opposite wall, of course you need cut off the extra part - but the other end of that cut-off piece can be the starter piece on a future row. I also used an air-driven Bostitch stapler - I don't recommend any manual fastening method such as a hammer and nails. Read Less

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 16 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This flooring still looks fastastic after over 10 years! I installed this natural red oak flooring in my 13' x 15' dining room over ten years ago and it still looks new, like I installed it yesterday! Extremely satisfied with this flooring and its durable hard finish. I used tar paper and a Bostitch pneumatic 15.5-Gauge flooring stapler with 1/2 inch x 2" staples. All you need to do is position the stapler against the edge of the flooring and give it a whack with the rubber-head hammer that comes with the nailer, and it pulls the flooring strip tight as it drives the staple. Took only 1 day, and this was the first time I had ever installed wood flooring. September 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Our new floors look and feel amazing! We recently installed hardwood floors in three of our rooms - all connected. My husband did the installation on his days off over two and a half months. He found the product easy to work with (he's very "handy") and the quality was consistent from box to box. We used a total of 29 boxes. I had purchased extra as recommended but ended up returning the extra. By the way - the return was easy! We have two Labs - they love the new floors and I love cleaning because their fur does not stick to the floors like it did to the carpeting. We had toyed with the idea with installing laminate and decided against it for a number of reasons. Do not hesitate to purchase this product - great price and excellent quality. June 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice long pieces, very little waste I just put this flooring down this weekend in a room 210 square feet. I bought 240 sq ft just in case but didn't even open the last case. Nice long pieces with very little damage or unusable pieces. June 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kitchen floor Everyone who has come to my home and raved about the new floor. It is beautiful and so easy to keep clean. July 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by American Originals Natural Red Oak 3/4 in. Thick x 2-1/4 in. Wide Solid Hardwood Flooring (20 sq. ft. / case) Had only one board in 8 boxes which had been badly milled. Just beautiful looking floor. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice flooring! This is the second time I have used this product. Both times, I found it to be great. Only 2 or 3 pieces out of several boxes were unusable because of natural splits in them. Great assortment of lengths. No pieces were too short. Plenty of long pieces to choose from for borders, doorways, etc. Very few bowed pieces, and I was able to use them even if they were bowed. June 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good match to our original oak hardwood floors We installed these oak hardwood floors in the kitchen and dining room of our 1966 ranch that came with original oak hardwood floors in the adjacent front room. The new oak was a very close match to the original oak. The new floors have a glossy finish that we hope will dull with time, but otherwise they look great. Installation was typical. Nail down T&G. We used a felt/tar paper between the plywood subfloor and the new hardwoods. Some of the new planks were curved, but none were cupped. Sometimes the tongue or groove wouldn't be 100% but since they are genuine wood - you get some imperfections. We had ordered 10% more than we needed to account for this and it wasn't a problem. July 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Flooring Project Flooring was simple to install. Product defects were not culled out at the factory. Looks wonderful and it is long lasting as I have installed previously in other parts of the house. Great diy project for anyone with the time. March 30, 2016
