I have pre-existing hardwood that will surround this new hardwood. It is the same type but 14 years old. Is it better to refinish that before putting this down to look uniform or to not use this prefinished and just get unfinished and then redo all of the floors? I am trying to save money and time but want it to look uniform.

This wood was put on our first floor several years ago, before we moved in. It's definitely been in the house over ten years at this point and there is some definite yellowing in it. We should refinish the floor soon, but we recently put the same wood on the stairs and in our upstairs hallway -- prefinished. They don't match perfectly, but I don't feel like it's an appreciable difference. Picture Read More

Hi Becky,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your hardwood flooring questions. Armstrong is not in the refinishing business, this is best left to professionals. I suggest searching your Yellow Pages under Flooring, repairs/contractors for a company that specializes in this type of work. They are going to be able to provide the best recommendation of your question.

Answer:
Yes, although it would be difficult. One would have to completely remove the finish and to do that, it would have to be sanded enough to remove the microbevel. So, it would most likely have to be sanded after installation, then stained, and then a new clearcoat would have to be applied.

Answer:
I would only mix them if the products have the exact same actual thickness when laid together. The tongues and grooves of the two products must align perfectly. The only way to know for sure would be to remove several pieces from the boxes and "pretend" install on a hard, flat surface (like the floor in the store). Hope this helps.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Our new floors look and feel amazing! We recently installed hardwood floors in three of our rooms - all connected. My husband did the installation on his days off over two and a half months. He found the product easy to work with (he's very "handy") and the quality was consistent from box to box. We used a total of 29 boxes. I had purchased extra as recommended but ended up returning the extra. By the way - the return was easy! We have two Labs - they love the new floors and I love cleaning because their fur does not stick to the floors like it did to the carpeting. We had toyed with the idea with installing laminate and decided against it for a number of reasons. Do not hesitate to purchase this product - great price and excellent quality. June 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kitchen floor Everyone who has come to my home and raved about the new floor. It is beautiful and so easy to keep clean. July 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice long pieces, very little waste I just put this flooring down this weekend in a room 210 square feet. I bought 240 sq ft just in case but didn't even open the last case. Nice long pieces with very little damage or unusable pieces. June 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by American Originals Natural Red Oak 3/4 in. Thick x 2-1/4 in. Wide Solid Hardwood Flooring (20 sq. ft. / case) Had only one board in 8 boxes which had been badly milled. Just beautiful looking floor. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice flooring! This is the second time I have used this product. Both times, I found it to be great. Only 2 or 3 pieces out of several boxes were unusable because of natural splits in them. Great assortment of lengths. No pieces were too short. Plenty of long pieces to choose from for borders, doorways, etc. Very few bowed pieces, and I was able to use them even if they were bowed. June 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good match to our original oak hardwood floors We installed these oak hardwood floors in the kitchen and dining room of our 1966 ranch that came with original oak hardwood floors in the adjacent front room. The new oak was a very close match to the original oak. The new floors have a glossy finish that we hope will dull with time, but otherwise they look great. Installation was typical. Nail down T&G. We used a felt/tar paper between the plywood subfloor and the new hardwoods. Some of the new planks were curved, but none were cupped. Sometimes the tongue or groove wouldn't be 100% but since they are genuine wood - you get some imperfections. We had ordered 10% more than we needed to account for this and it wasn't a problem. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Flooring Project Flooring was simple to install. Product defects were not culled out at the factory. Looks wonderful and it is long lasting as I have installed previously in other parts of the house. Great diy project for anyone with the time. March 30, 2016
