We are DIY people and installing the hardwood floors. Does it matter if we use staples or cleat nails?
Asked by: Jordan
Good Morning Jordan, Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. The choice of staples or cleats is entirely up to you. We just say the fasteners should be 1 1/2" - 2" in length, and 15.5 gauged staples, or 16 gauge cleats. We also say to use a "Blind" fastening machine designed for installing 3/4" (19 mm) hardwood flooring using staples or cleats. The nailing machine MUST HAVE a protective foot attachment to prevent edge bruising and finish damage. For your convenience here is a link to our installation instructions for 3/4" solid hardwood. https://goo.gl/m5BV5f Please note the special instructions for installing plank flooring 4" and wider. I hope this information is helpful. Have a great day.

We removed our carpet and trim, moved all of our furniture out. It took hours of labor and not to mention the time it took to bring in 22 boxes of hardwood. Our installers came to install the floor and 30% of the boards were either cupped, dented, scratched or split. They also sent two different lots. Our installer stated this is one of the worst quality products that he has seen and he has installed tons of wood floors. The floor was also very soft and it dented and scratched easily. The installer stated the the Maple was probably Southern grown instead of Northern Maple. Home Depot did refund our money however we are now left with plywood floors for another month until we can order another floor. It will not be Bruce! Would not recommend this product to anyone.

We installed approximately 500 square feet of it in our hallway, dining room, and kitchen. When the pieces meshed correctly, it was easy to install. However, many of the pieces (especially the longer ones) were bowed. This in itself would not be a problem because the nailing equipment can handle most of the slight imperfections. I would recommend having a professional install it for you to save this frustration. It is well worth the extra cost. If you still want to install it yourself, consider a smaller size than the 5" boards. The nailing equipment will do a better job hammering them together. The 5" boards are not for a novice to woodworking.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Would not buy again After looking at hundreds of flooring choices we decided on this. I thought how could we go wrong with solid maple and I loved the color. We move frequently - 10x in 12 years and most have had solid oak and once we purchased solid maple and had them finished a medium brown. I really loved the solid maple b/c it was durable and looked great so I thought these prefinished maple floors were the way to go. At first the floors looked beautiful. It hasn't even been a month and these floors are terrible. I want to tear them out and put in anything else. They get deep scratches easily and every time something falls off of the kitchen counter the floor dents. When it dents, you see the light color so it is very noticeable. I bought some of the acrylic filler which is ok for the larger dents but the scratches are awful. We have 4 kids and 2 dogs but never had any issues with our other solid oak or maple flooring.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Numerous damaged pieces and sharp color contrasts There were numerous damaged pieces in the boxes, including improperly stained pieces. Too many dark pieces compared to the contrasting lighter maple.

We looked at many samples in flooring stores, those purchased on line including lots of bamboo and others. this is the one we fell in love with. The warmth of the color adds so much to the room, along with the greater width and random length of the boards. None of the extra purchased in case of unusable pieces was needed. We like it so much we are taking up carpet elsewhere to install more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Really Beautiful Floor Despite a Couple of Small Quality Control Issues Our maple hardwood floor came out great. We had to watch carefully as we installed because a few of the planks were just not cut square on the ends. There was a surprising amount of variation in the width as well, considering that we understood this to be a top-quality product. There were also a few handling scars from where someone in the factory apparently just got careless. But, a handful of bum boards in over 400 square feet of flooring isn't that bad, and most of the time we could trim the end and then use that board at one end of a row. Only a very few were worthless. The stain and clear finish were consistently well-done. Board thickness was consistent, as were the tongue and groove interfaces. We followed instructions for sub-floor preparation and installation and came out with a beautiful squeak-free final product. We had ordered one box more than the calculated minimum to cover our floor, so we didn't worry about setting aside the shortest boards or any that had questionable spots.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from pretty but lots of defects It looks pretty but has lots of manufacturing defects. If you get it make sure the installer has lots of extra pieces and is willing to take the time to go through the boxes using only the good pieces.
