Hi -- Sorry if this question is otherwise answered. We will install the product on 3/4 inch plywood, joists 16" on center, second floor above our son's bedroom. Is there a recommended underlayment / sound barrier? Al
Asked by: Al
Odd that you say "The only underlayment recommended for the American Originals Country Natural is the S-1837 Quiet Comfort Underlayment" -- but it is not sold by Home Depot. None of these products can be used, Thank you! Al

how long does it need to be at room temperature before installing?
Asked by: clueless
Although it is not necessary to acclimate engineered flooring it is best to store it in the environment in which it is expected to perform prior to installation. Do not open cartons of locking hardwood flooring in advance of installation. Air conditioning/heating systems should be in place and in operation at least 14 days prior, during and after installation of the flooring. Below I have provided a link to our installation recommendations for this product.

Customer Reviews

American Originals Warmed Spice Maple 3/8 in. T x 3 in. W x Varied Lng Wide Eng Click Lock Hardwood Floor(22sq.ft./case) is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mr. This is a very nice wood once you've succeeded in laying it down,,,,but that's part of the problem, laying it down is not easy. There are lots of warped and bowed planks and a lot of milling errors on the board ends which makes it difficult to install this flooring without causing gaps. I managed to do it with assistance from a helper but doing it alone would have meant a sloppy installation. Now that it's installed I'm very happy with the rich look and quality of the wood. Bruce (Armstrong) need to do a better job of quality control as waste was too high, around 15% in my case. Many of the planks had poor finish, broken tongues, etc. which end up adding to the cost of the project. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying this wood flooring but close inspection of the wood (if that's possible) is in order before you buy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from so much curved plank that caused gap among lines I used 80 cases of this Bruce gunstock oak, it's a great challenge and I am an expert hardwood floor installer now after 1.5 months of DIY. I chose the gunstock because I liked the color, so I bought 105 boxes of it to finish about 2000 square feet area in my house. The price is $3.48/sq feet, I asked the sales person at homedepot if the cheaper price means bad quality and the answer was no, he said it's cheaper than other oak hardwood floor at homedepot because homedepot sell a lot of it and had big inventory. After completing about 100 sq feet, I started to wondering why the line is not straight any more and gap start to build up line after line, then I noticed that every box has a few curved plank, I decide to take the challenge and continue. To work around the curved plank, I used two ways, for curved out one, I sometimes can force them straight while nailing them down. For the curved in one, I have to cut them into two pieces from the point where the curve started so the split two pieces are likely straight so I can use them at either end to the wall. The curved plank mostly happened to the long one, less chance for those that is shorter than 3 feet. so for every one that is longer than 3 or 4 feet, I need to hand pick and check, and decide that to do with it. There are a few times that I did not check carefully and it start to cause gap, If I do not fix it right away, the gap will be harder to be fixed in the next line. so I used chisel to chop 1mm to try to make the next line fit straight. A guy in my office was doing the hardwood floor at same time and he did not have the problem using natural color oak sold at the same home depot store, the floor cost is about 10% more than mine, but he saved a lot of time and effort and the installation is as easy as lay it out and nail it. I would not recommend this one because every box of the gunstock has curved plank, as little as a couple or as much as half of the box. Eventually I finished it and start to enjoy the hardwood floor, but for the time and effort I put in, I would not recommend it unless you want to build your trouble-shooting experience and become an expert.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap For a Reason I just finished installing 500 square feet of this flooring for a customer, and frankly, had I known how poorly milled this product is, I would advised the customer against purchasing it in the first place. I was asked to inspect it prior to the customer's purchase, but it's difficult to gauge until you start installing the flooring. Had I known how poor the quality actually was, I also would have charged more for the installation, since it took a substantial amount of time to try and sort through the boards with surface flaws, missing tongues, cupping and bowing, and widths that varied by as much as 1.5mm. As well, the sloppy tongue and groove fit means this is likely to be a floor that will always squeak. The colour grade variances were acceptable (at least to me, as it is wood ), and within a small enough overall percentage that the extremes could be used in closets. The biggest issue is the width variances. Expect about a 10-15% waste because of this. I would rate this flooring at 8 out of 10 for colour grading, but 6 out of 10 for milling. Bruce used to produce a quality product, but what ever mill or mills this flooring is being made in, is second rate at best. Caveat emptor.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not all it's worth Beautiful colouring but you have a 10% loss per box. A lot of stains. Variations in width making it difficult to match up. Boxes are not consistent with the various sizes. A lot of short pieces. Quite a few pieces with flaws that should have been caught during manufacturing. Including quite a few bowed pieces. If you choose to use this product inspect every piece before laying it down.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from agree with previous comments, wood is warped , bowed or both difficult to put it down straight . colour may vary from box to box best to mix them up. over all colour is appealing , but overall disappointing

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks different I've been buying and returning wood flooring from home depot because I can't physically see them on a display anywhere. I've found the photos online are deceiving. In the case of this Bruce 3/8"x3 click engineered "country natural maple" this is especially true. I wanted there to be variation in color and gaining but in the entire case I ordered they're all the same light maple look. So if that's what you're going for, then this is a good buy. The quality seems nice, it clicks together fairly easily, the micro beveled edges are less drastic than other products for a more traditional flat look. The sheen is moderate, I would call it a satin, not gloss, definitely not matte. Hope that helps!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice product but some of the ends of the planks were not stained. The floor installed easily, is good quality, looks great, but some of the micro bevel ends of the planks were not stained. I will need a touch up kit to fix the ends of the planks that are not stained.
