Customer Questions & Answers

how is the flooring nailed down

Asked by: Ric
This flooring is nailed down with a 2" staple using a pneumatic gun. This gun runs along the tong edge of the board inserting staples every 6". My wife and I have installed this flooring in three of our last houses. To keep the project moving quickly my wife was able to layout the boards and run the gun while I made the cuts. Another words you can do it yourself but having someone else you can work with makes the job go that much better. The instructions tell you that a 3/4 sub floor is required to properly anchor the 2" staples. You also need to consider the transition to your flooring that you are matching up to when thinking about your sub floor elevation. We used a table saw and a compound sliding miter saw to make all cuts exact. I have also had to use a jig saw, reciprocating saw to cut under door trim/jam, finish pneumatic nail gun. Never use a hammer directly on the tong of the flooring to get it in place, take a cut piece of the flooring to use with a hammer to get in place. Have a good plan before starting the project not one you will want to rush to complete.

I am looking to install Wolf Run Oak in a virginia beach home with underfloor radiant heating system.

What is the janka of the Wolf Run Oak? Manufacture of heating system recommends a janka of over 1375. I cant seem to find the janka for the Wolf Run Oak. Thank you.
Asked by: Bill
FYI, I would not recommend this product for you, I had to stand on some of the boards just to get them to fit, and hammer them. This might cause damage to your heating.

American Vintage Scraped Fall Classic 3/4 in. T x 5 in. W x Varying Length Solid Hardwood Flooring (23.5 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 85.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from **** HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT!!!! **** I loved the product but customer service was HORRIBLE!! There were about 2 boxes worth of useless material that I thought they would like to know about and I thought they would do something. We'll they say that it falls under their regulations of 5% material that you are expected to have left as uninstalable. I'm afraid that their 50 year warrantee is also false because I just paid over $200.00 on useless material. Don't believe their 50 year warrantee. They really need to work on their customer service. I cannot believe they expected me to spend $500.00 (5% of materials) extra for USELESS MATERIAL. I could not be more disappointed. I will never recomend ANY products from this company. Worst purchase of the year. Extremely disappointed and upset with the company.

Looks very nice and bright. Only had 5-6 boards that were badly warped out of 35 boxes. Numerous boards had chipped ends but I was able to place them where they could be cut off. Only a few boards had tongues or grooves that were unusable, typically because of knots. The scraped finish adds a rustic element but not too rustic. We are very happy with the quality and result of this flooring install.

The contractor put them in, but it seemed to go quickly and easily. It may not be the hardest of wood - I managed to drop a wine bottle from the top of the fridge the other day and it put a good little dent in the floor - luckily we didn't go with tile or the bottle would have exploded! The floor has cleaned up very nicely though from the occasional spill and a couple "dog accidents."

This evaluation is from going through 4 boxes of 5" wide Bruce American Vintage Mocha Scraped hardwood flooring. The finish was uneven and blotchy on a majority of the boards. Many boards had defects in the wood on top, bottom or both which made them unusable. Bruce did not fill quite a few holes on the top sides of the boards with putty. Even inexpensive Chinese hardwood flooring that I've seen has holes filled on both top and bottom. Rough areas that should have been filled and sanded did not get such treatment. Some of the boards (not a lot) had broken tongues. Some of the boards had cracks significant enough that they should not be installed. Some of the boards had large sections missing from the bottoms of the boards. All together, more than half of the boards were not usable. The instructions tell the installer to use a urethane adhesive. Professional installers who I spoke with had varying opinions about the use of an adhesive. The reality is, due to the 5" width, this product should be made from rift and / or quarter sawn boards rather than plain sawn since the rift / quarter boards have far less potential for expansion and contraction. Rift / quarter sawn boards are more expensive but the need for adhesive goes away. Adhesive may make replacing boards after a spill or water leak very difficult. Installation is more costly and time consuming due to the need for adhesive. The requirement for adhesive should be made plain as day instead of putting this information on the bottom of the box. I called Bruce technical support. Bruce technical support consisted of a lady who reads from a script or runs to an expert. Even after consulting with the expert, the answers given were not to the questions that I asked. Please do your own research before buying 4" or wider hardwood. I am glad that I bought this from Home Depot since the local HD has great customer service and a generous return policy. I noticed that the local Home Depot store put the returned hardwood flooring back on the shelf rather than returning it to the vendor or manufacturer. Really the product is defective and should not be resold. This cost a lot of time so I hope others can avoid the problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really nice floor...Great value! Installed 780sq ft throughout the first floor. Really looks great. My only suggestion: Since some boxes have a different lot #, you may want to open boxes and mix up the pieces you're installing. We got through the first part of project with the same lot # not knowing there was a difference in the shading of wood with other boxes that had different lot #. I thought they were from the same lot because we purchased the wood at one Home Depot location. Overall, you really can't tell but if I were to do it again, I'd mix them up and check out the lot #'s. At 5.19 sq ft, you'd be hard pressed to find a 5 in plank at a flooring store for this price. Most flooring stores started at 6.99 sq ft. Hope this review helped if you're considering this product.

Purchased 12 boxes to do family room. Only a few boards had a defect of some sort but saved them for cut offs so really no waste at all. Just finished a few days ago so cant say anything about how they hold up and cleaning and care but hope its good.

The manufacturer needs to spend ONE MORE dollar on the box. Too many are torn and busted, and the tongues are sometimes cracked or crushed, which slows installation when you have to trim boards.
