Color Difference Ponderosa Oak?

There are two Bruce Ponderosa Oak options, the click and lock version and this version. Why are the colors representing each so different on the website when the sample I got in the store had both options on the back? It seems if both options are represented by the same in-store sample, then the photos on the Home Depot website should appear the same.

Answer:
We have five different samples from the store at our home. The light and dark variations differ quite a bit. I layed them out on the floor with some other samples and my kids actually thought they were 5 different products. I personally love that look-also the different color variations will make it harder to tell when it's dirty.

Answer:
Sometimes the color sample on line as well as in printed copies can sometimes look different than that actual live sample piece. It is always best to request a live sample piece to see a true representation of the material.

Hello Dj,
Thank you for contacting Armstrong Flooring Inc.
Color changes in hardwood flooring, patina, are a natural characteristic of all wood species. "Sun-shading", ambering or yellowing, and mellowing are terms frequently used to describe this occurrence. The color change may be slow to age with the exception of species like American Cherry and Pecan/Hickory. Most imported exotic species are dark in color naturally, but darken even more and often do so very rapidly. Market trends have shown a dramatic increase in use of lighter stained products or products with no stain at all. The use of stain camouflages the natural color changes associated with wood. For that reason natural or unstained products may show color change more rapidly than if they had been stained.
Technically, the color change occurs in the lignin within the cell wall due to photochemical and oxidative chemical reactions. The rate of the chemical reaction is associated with the species, air, temperature, light and its intensity as well as the trace chemicals within the wood.
Many finishes can and do amber with age, affecting the overall appearance of patina, Armstrong Wood Products' finishes remain clear throughout their usage life. Because wood is a natural product and because photochemical and oxidative chemical changes are a natural phenomenon, Armstrong Wood Products does not accept responsibility for these color changes. We disclaim such responsibility directly within our warranty. It should be noted, however, that a customer that is dissatisfied with the difference in the color of a new floor versus what they find on a sample board may not have to remain dissatisfied for long. The new flooring will age to match the sample board and very quickly if the species selection is one of those previously mentioned.
It is important to note that the process of aging; patina, is closely associated with the surface of the floor. Most color change only occurs .010" into the surface. A floor that has darkened beyond satisfaction may be lightly sanded (finish removal required) to remove the patina. When a floor is sanded and refinished, one is essentially "sanding" away our finish to "white wood," thus nullifying our finish warranty since our finish no longer exists. It should be noted that the same color change would again occur.
I hope you find this information helpful.

Customer Reviews

Oak Ponderosa 3/8 in. Thick x 5 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Hardwood Flooring (25 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Finish, Easy Installation We purchased this to patch a smallish area in our family room where the fireplace hearth had been reduced in size. Selected from store sample to match existing flooring coloration; however, I will say the actual product is more distressed than the sample showed - not enough to return and look for an alternative, but it is more rustic than you may expect. The "random lengths" may be more in evidence across boxes than what we saw in our single box which was almost entirely full length pieces.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Color difference The flooring had to be special ordered but arrived in a timely manner once in stock. One major disappointment is that the flooring is considerable redder in hue than any of the samples we have here at home. There are some darker brown pieces but it's definitely not how I envisioned our investment to turn out. Install has gone smoothly with the floating floors thus. There is a slight sheen to the finish as well.
