CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 253 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by So far I love this machine! I have been using a Troy-built 10HP chipper for over a decade and decided it was time to replace it. Parts were getting harder to find, and frankly, the shredder was hard to feed. We live on 5 acres of forest land that requires constant upkeep to keep the fire hazard down. While burn piles are a option, it is preferable to return as much waste back to the woods as possible rather than sending it up in smoke. I have at least 24 hours of run time on the machine and have had to sharpen the chipper knife once (due mostly to chipping dry wood instead of freshly cut branches). I did take off the rubber safety guard on the in-feed so as to make feeding in really brushy limbs easier. I think that a longer in-feed would have been a better design than the rubber/metal restrictor that comes with the machine. Only an idiot would run a chipper w/o safety glasses or stick his arm down the chute. As far as the shredder? It is easy to feed, and I use it to handle the fir/pine boughs that don't go down the chipper easily. The shredder easily eats 1/2" branches one at a time (anyone who has dealt with the brush off of an oak tree knows that you are not going to easily feed it down a 3x4" chute). This machine is much easier to service than my old chipper; blade sharpening, etc. When the blade is sharp, it feeds its self, when it gets dull, take time to put an edge back on it. I was able to sharpen the blade with my disc sander. There we no nicks or chips out of the blade at all. The machine starts easily and runs forever on a tank of gas. The only time I have got the motor to bog down was when I was feeding armfuls of fir boughs down the shredder. The reason? The discharge screen was getting clogged up from the mass of needles and chipped wood. No problem, use the pitch fork and keep it cleared out under the discharge. I don't use the 'bag' that came with the chipper. It would be a waste of time due to the large volume or material that I feed through this machine. I haven't used the tow bar yet, but moving the machine is a breeze with the large tires and wide wheel base. Once we get some much needed rain here in southern Oregon, I'll be pulling this machine out into the woods to work instead of dragging all of the tree trimmings into our green zone to process. My old chipper doesn't hold a candle to this machine: this one feeds easier both chipping and shredding and it takes half the time to get to the blade to sharpen it. The extra five ponies don't hurt either, but once the chipper blade is dull, horse power doesn't mean anything. I don't think I could have found more value for the money, and only time will tell on the durability. I'll let you know in the next couple of months because this puppy is going to get a real work out! September 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Exceeded Expectations This chipper was easy to assemble and easy to work. It has done a great job chipping up the cedar limbs I've been pushing through it. It does require you to push the limbs into it. I somewhat expected to push it down once and the chipper take the limb in by itself. Nonetheless, this was well worth it. July 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by This product exceeds its recomended uses My wife and I cleared 1/2 acre of bush / slash / vines / rotten leaves & wood with this machine and it performed like a champ (Photos 1-6). The partial assembly was straight forward for any one with minimal mechanical skills (took about 15 minutes to unbox & assemble). Starts with one pull most times (make sure choke is on when motor is cold). Blades sharpen on bench grinder with ease, removal & replacement not difficult for someone with a little more than minimal mechanical skills. Most impressive was how the top feed performed on small loose twigs / leaves / rotten branches / (dirt - mulch - small stone) mix. This machine works like a stone crusher on material I am sure it is not recommended for as evidenced in my 6 large piles of chips / mulch. Even the blades stood up fine as I have only replaced them 5 times with all the abuse I have given them. Make sure when feeding the machine through the upper hopper to drop the small twigs & branches butt / stem end first thus preventing clogging. I could not imagine making garden mulch any other way, now that we own this machine (a fantastic residual use for the chipper, after your lot is cleared). I am still on the original drive belt and the machine has never clogged. The 15 HP machine is well worth the additional cost when I consider what the more powerful motor has accomplished, (Remember a reliable unclogged machine means no hands & arms in or near any mechanical parts and you cannot place a price on the safety of you or your loved ones body parts) JOB WELL DONE - BRUSH MASTER February 11, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Commercial Unit: NO, but will chip soft butter really well Well, I should have known that problems would mount when the unit was delivered with a defective catch bag (grommet to hold it against the unit was missing) and after 47 minutes on hold I was told by the “help?” desk, “tough;” they could take the entire machine back or nothing. Since it seemed to work great I thought I could use it anyway. That was the second mistake. (First was ordering it in the first place) So, I used it once and put it away for a few months. I pulled it out the next time and it would not chip soft butter. The chipper blade was shot. Turns out the single blade (another defect) used is NOT TEMPERED and only lasts about 20 minutes, max. The metal is so soft that the result is a blade that wears down so unevenly (see pictures) that it deforms the sharpening plain to the extent that even a professional sharpening service cannot re-sharpen it. I called the help desk again and was told to cut my chipping time in half before replacing the blade, a procedure that takes about an hour the first time you do it and about 20 minutes thereafter). Of course, an extra blade was supposed to be included. It was not. After 62 minutes on hold I was told I should have opened the package earlier, but they would be happy to take my order for another blade? Home Depot sells the replacement for over $40.00 with local taxes included. So, let’s total this up: at 10 minutes of chipping that is approximately $4.00 per minute of chipping per blade or about $240.00 per hour. Not so good for a machine that costs…well I can’t say because the rules on this review are do not allow me to state the actual price I paid, but go to the HD website for an idea. Oh, BTW, the chipper is not self-feeding as advertised, either. Then there is the leaf chute. This part of the machine does a great job as long as you do not feed more than 1 leaf at a time. Now that may be an exaggeration, but it does clog with even the slightest handful of leaves and heaven forbid if one of the leaves is damp. A wet leaf clings to the screen in the exit shoot and keeps other leaves from exiting the shoot. But, you get really good at removing and cleaning it since you also have to remove the screen to replace the blades anyway and you have to do that every 10 minutes or so when chipping. The best thing about this machine is the engine. It starts first pull every time. That is a good thing, because the recoil starter rope doesn’t always actually recoil to its original position. The fact that the muffler shield falls off after the first hour you use it (screws holding it on cannot be tightened enough and they fall into the bits of shredded material that gathers at the base of the machine during use) is not a great concern either. Over all suggestion? Easy! DO NOT buy this machine. Find one that uses multiple tempered blades and with a leave grinding system that does not clog at the first hint of extra material being submitted. April 14, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Works as advertised. Works as advertised and is very safely designed. The lengths of the feeder chutes make it almost impossible for your hand reach the cutting blades. More power then you would ever need and is easy to move. I have used it for about 10 hours over two days. Ninety percent of the time I used to shred leafs from a large oak tree. I only used the chipper to chip clippings from several citrus trees. The only thing I had a problem with is the clogging the feeder chutes. When putting leafs in the top feeder chute, you had pace yourself. If not, the funnel shape of the chute would cause it to clog with leafs before they reach the shredding blades. I then had to turn the machine off and pull leafs out by hand to clear the chute. The size and shape of the chipper chute made it hard to chip any limbs that had a V in them. I even had to break the V’s in the small citrus tree clippings to get them into the chute. The chipper work great to long, straight limbs and never slowed down. March 20, 2014
