Customer Reviews

15 HP 420 cc Gas Commercial-Duty Chipper Shredder with 4 in. x 3 in. Diameter Feed with Bonus Kit is rated 2.1 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Commercial Unit: NO, but will chip soft butter really well Well, I should have known that problems would mount when the unit was delivered with a defective catch bag (grommet to hold it against the unit was missing) and after 47 minutes on hold I was told by the “help?” desk, “tough;” they could take the entire machine back or nothing. Since it seemed to work great I thought I could use it anyway. That was the second mistake. (First was ordering it in the first place) So, I used it once and put it away for a few months. I pulled it out the next time and it would not chip soft butter. The chipper blade was shot. Turns out the single blade (another defect) used is NOT TEMPERED and only lasts about 20 minutes, max. The metal is so soft that the result is a blade that wears down so unevenly (see pictures) that it deforms the sharpening plain to the extent that even a professional sharpening service cannot re-sharpen it. I called the help desk again and was told to cut my chipping time in half before replacing the blade, a procedure that takes about an hour the first time you do it and about 20 minutes thereafter). Of course, an extra blade was supposed to be included. It was not. After 62 minutes on hold I was told I should have opened the package earlier, but they would be happy to take my order for another blade? Home Depot sells the replacement for over $40.00 with local taxes included. So, let’s total this up: at 10 minutes of chipping that is approximately $4.00 per minute of chipping per blade or about $240.00 per hour. Not so good for a machine that costs…well I can’t say because the rules on this review are do not allow me to state the actual price I paid, but go to the HD website for an idea. Oh, BTW, the chipper is not self-feeding as advertised, either. Then there is the leaf chute. This part of the machine does a great job as long as you do not feed more than 1 leaf at a time. Now that may be an exaggeration, but it does clog with even the slightest handful of leaves and heaven forbid if one of the leaves is damp. A wet leaf clings to the screen in the exit shoot and keeps other leaves from exiting the shoot. But, you get really good at removing and cleaning it since you also have to remove the screen to replace the blades anyway and you have to do that every 10 minutes or so when chipping. The best thing about this machine is the engine. It starts first pull every time. That is a good thing, because the recoil starter rope doesn’t always actually recoil to its original position. The fact that the muffler shield falls off after the first hour you use it (screws holding it on cannot be tightened enough and they fall into the bits of shredded material that gathers at the base of the machine during use) is not a great concern either. Over all suggestion? Easy! DO NOT buy this machine. Find one that uses multiple tempered blades and with a leave grinding system that does not clog at the first hint of extra material being submitted.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst product ever bought One thing I like about this chipper is big powerful motor. This is only good thing. Chipper is not self feeding as advertised, as self feeding feature stopped to work after 10 minutes of chipping. Also engineering is worse I ever seen: the blade is small (3 inch) and becomes dull in 30minutes of work. This chipper needs four or minimum two blades. This unit does not make chips, it just mills wood. Returned to store. Do not recommend to anyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total junk This product is a total junk. It is badly engineered and the quality of the workmanship and the parts material is very low. Engines have huge problems; mine broke after five uses, and then again after 7 uses, not to list other small and not so small problems. The customer service is non-responsive and not even willing to fulfill the mandated warranty service. They refused to repair my engine and other broken parts under the warranty insisting to their authorized repairman that they do not see anything wrong with the BROKEN parts! Home Depot, who surprisingly sells this junk, had to intervene and take care of the warranty repair themselves. Will not buy another one from this company. Bad company and bad product!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from need to stand behind their product got t the ch4 from home depot in sept. 2010. only used it a couple of times and it worked great. was using it a couple weeks ago and after about an hour running deceided to shut it off to take a break. when i tried to restart it the rope pull was impossible to pull. pulled out the spark plug and was able to pull it normal. plug back in and was locked up again. pulled the engine apart and found the cam lobe was hitting the crankshaft throw .retimed the engine and now it workeds great. found out you can't get parts for the engine. they said they would sell me a new engine. it is the same engine harbor freight sells for a lot less and it has electric start.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from more set up diagrams and operational diagrams would be helpful Set up is a bit of a challenge, took an hour. Directions on the engine operation were minimal, some experimentation required and the first time the engine ran the belt burned black smoke, possibly too tight at the set up. It has jammed a few times, small stick stuck in grinder area freezes the whole motor and burned a belt. The leaf top doesn't work as quickly as i thought, but it handles the larger sticks & small logs easily. Engine cranks quickly and effortlessly but you absolutely need some mechanical skills to replace the belt and/ continuing to operate. Early in the process, used it three times, and overall it works but changing the belt on the 3rd time (smokes the belt if anything is left in the grinder area) was frustrating. Seems mechanically sound, so hoping for better results as i get used to the nuances.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Machine - Poor Customer Service This chipper is a heavy duty unit. It has plenty of power and can chip branches over 3" no problem. My branch chute started to split after the first 3 uses and after the fourth use it had opened up enough I could put my hand through it and rendered the branch chipper unusable. The rest of the machine is great and I think it was just a faulty side chute, no big concern, but the customer service is quite poor. The company will not return my emails / calls for warranty service to get a new side chute. All in all I would gladly buy this chipper again, but don't expect and cutomer support.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has a major problem that can't be repaired The reviewer 3horses from arizona hit the nail on the head with his review. Basically I experienced the same problem. I was very happy when I used it for the first two days. After I used it for approx. 20 hours it could'nt cut even 1" branches. the blade was very dull. So I replaced the blade...sharpend the blades several times and it still does not cut well, it smokes when I push the branches in hard. The problem with it is more than the blade. The way it was explained to me is that the other end where the blade strikes against gets dull and cannot be sharpend. Here you have an $1100 "beast" (as some people described it) sitting in the back yard as a pile of steel junk. The people that gave it great reviews, either reviewed it after using it only a few hours of work and did not get to this point yet, or they got the super machines...Customer support is terrible. They don't answer. Also the bag is a joke. It tore up on the first day. We used a tarp and we had to shovel the chips continuously becaus the machine is too low to the ground. I don't see how I can recommend this to anyone unless I find a solution.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Solid for the small stuff This chipper shredder is easy to assemble and can handle some decent projects, but the 4" rating is greatly overstated. The largest sized branch it handles is a 3" x 4", and it needs to be soft wood. The unit was fairly worthless for even 2" - 3" diameter cedar. The only larger branches it could handle were partially decomposed and well weathered.
