Another reviewer earlier mentioned that that side chute for large branch is useless, so I knew what I was getting into. That reviewer turn out to be correct - there's a design defect that essentially rubs and frictionally burns the tip of large branches fed into the side chute and no matter how hard I push, there's no cutting at all. So I've been only using the top bin small branches as you can see here. It's a bit dangerous because once it catches, it pull it down extremely fast and I my hand getting sucked in - very scary feeling. So I just thrown small branches in and then push them down with another stick that you can see in the foreground. Our neighbor bought a 10 HP one from Home Depot some 6 years ago and he says the side chute work well for that model. I wish I had bought a less expensive 10 HP model, but I had previously bought a small $120 machine that's essentially a toy and wanted the biggest "commercial" machine I can get. At least the top feeder work well for me, so I'm half satisfied. Once you fuel up this machine and add motor oil, Home Depot will not take it back, according to the label on the box. Obviously, I'm being a bit generous on the overall rating.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by modd2 Commercial Unit: NO, but will chip soft butter really well
Well, I should have known that problems would mount when the unit was delivered with a defective catch bag (grommet to hold it against the unit was missing) and after 47 minutes on hold I was told by the “help?” desk, “tough;” they could take the entire machine back or nothing. Since it seemed to work great I thought I could use it anyway.
That was the second mistake. (First was ordering it in the first place) So, I used it once and put it away for a few months.
I pulled it out the next time and it would not chip soft butter. The chipper blade was shot. Turns out the single blade (another defect) used is NOT TEMPERED and only lasts about 20 minutes, max. The metal is so soft that the result is a blade that wears down so unevenly (see pictures) that it deforms the sharpening plain to the extent that even a professional sharpening service cannot re-sharpen it. I called the help desk again and was told to cut my chipping time in half before replacing the blade, a procedure that takes about an hour the first time you do it and about 20 minutes thereafter). Of course, an extra blade was supposed to be included. It was not. After 62 minutes on hold I was told I should have opened the package earlier, but they would be happy to take my order for another blade? Home Depot sells the replacement for over $40.00 with local taxes included.
So, let’s total this up: at 10 minutes of chipping that is approximately $4.00 per minute of chipping per blade or about $240.00 per hour. Not so good for a machine that costs…well I can’t say because the rules on this review are do not allow me to state the actual price I paid, but go to the HD website for an idea.
Oh, BTW, the chipper is not self-feeding as advertised, either.
Then there is the leaf chute. This part of the machine does a great job as long as you do not feed more than 1 leaf at a time. Now that may be an exaggeration, but it does clog with even the slightest handful of leaves and heaven forbid if one of the leaves is damp. A wet leaf clings to the screen in the exit shoot and keeps other leaves from exiting the shoot. But, you get really good at removing and cleaning it since you also have to remove the screen to replace the blades anyway and you have to do that every 10 minutes or so when chipping.
The best thing about this machine is the engine. It starts first pull every time. That is a good thing, because the recoil starter rope doesn’t always actually recoil to its original position. The fact that the muffler shield falls off after the first hour you use it (screws holding it on cannot be tightened enough and they fall into the bits of shredded material that gathers at the base of the machine during use) is not a great concern either.
Over all suggestion? Easy!
DO NOT buy this machine. Find one that uses multiple tempered blades and with a leave grinding system that does not clog at the first hint of extra material being submitted.

This is about the worst piece of junk in my yard. It has tormented me with major mechanical issues since the first ten minutes of operation. Bolts breaking and stripping, and general failures. The engine seems quite good though, and power is adequate, and torque comes on good. The feed chute is too light and tends to split open. The belt cover also fell off, breaking the attach points. Both main bearings on the chipper wheel failed , and the bolts have sheared on both sides. What fun that repair is. I have heavily modified my unit and really made it into a decent machine, but anyone that does not have my machine shop access might be in trouble. Thanks Pirate

I would not recommend this product. I am returning it back to the store. This machine starts and runs easy, however, when you put branches in it. It clogs the machine and you have to shut it off and unclog it. I tried dried and soft material also same thing with leaves it does not seem to matter what goes in it it clogs. Called the company and take forever to get person to call back or someone that knows anything about the machine they make. They were of no help. Im machincally inclined and cant figure out machine. it clogs on discharge chute which has as a grill as the company calls it its a useless machine. I will be looking for a different company for a chipper/ shredder

I AM NOT HAPPY WITH AT ALL WITH THE CHIPPER. THE BLADE IS VERY POOR QUALITY(TOO SOFT OF METAL) AND GETS TOO DULL TO CHIP EVEN SOFT 2X4 WOOD AFTER ONLY A SHORT TIME IN USE. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CHIPPING ANY HARDWOOD TREE BRANCHES EVEN AFTER PUTTING A NEW BLADE IN. I HAVE NOT EVEN HAD IT A MONTH AND I HAVE ALREADY PUT THREE NEW BLADES IN AND RESHARPENED THEM SEVERAL TIMES. THE SHUT FOR THE TREE BRANCHES IS ALREADY SPLITTING DOWN AT THE BOTTOM WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE CHIPPER. IT NEEDS TO HAVE 2 BLADES INSTEAD OF ONE AND THE ANVIL THAT IT CUTS ON ALSO NEEDS TO BE HARDER METAL AS IT IS WORN ALSO AND CANNOT BE CHANGED

We were very disappointed with this machine.
The first day a gromet pulled out of the collection bag. The second time we used it, it would just die out after starting ... checked oil and everything but the engine just kept dying out. The third day it started and ran but the belt stretched out and fell off. Called company, belts are $25. The fourth time (fourth day) a 3/4 inch diameter piece of brush actually punctured a hole through the branch chute.
The manuel is not very helpful either ... it says to check the air filter but fails to say where it is ... one has to hunt for it.

This chipper is a heavy duty unit. It has plenty of power and can chip branches over 3" no problem. My branch chute started to split after the first 3 uses and after the fourth use it had opened up enough I could put my hand through it and rendered the branch chipper unusable. The rest of the machine is great and I think it was just a faulty side chute, no big concern, but the customer service is quite poor. The company will not return my emails / calls for warranty service to get a new side chute. All in all I would gladly buy this chipper again, but don't expect and cutomer support.
