Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It's Shredder Time! I bought this shredder in September 2015. It worked right out of the box. But I didn't have a chance to really use it until December. It worked right away after sitting completely fueled for 3 months. Then it wasn’t until today (July 2016) that I was able to get back to my shredding project. So the unit sat for an additional 7 months, same gas, no maintenance, and it started right away again. I ran it for about an hour and it worked without a hiccup. It’s a little tough for me to pull the rip cord as I have no arm strength at all but even I was able to get it started after a few pulls. It also may take a little bit of trial and error to get the right air to gas mixture on the choke but that’s easy to do. I live in southern Florida so there is no end to the trimming of trees, shrubs, hedges year round on my acre lot. Not built for large branches or logs but I have a lot of small tree branches (0.5 - 2 in diameter) and palm fronds to shred. This is perfect for that kind of yard waste. I would recommend this to anyone that needs a good basic shredder. July 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Gets the job done Initial assembly was fairly easy with only minor coaxing needed to get the leaf chute lined up. Pulling the starting cord does take some effort but it usually starts on the first pull. I used it for two seasons so far with good results. The first season involved clearing all ground cover and overgrown bushes from my new home. It chewed through everything and created a nice mulch which quickly decomposed over the winter. The second season was a lot of leaf chopping and tree trimming. This also went well with no mechanical problems so far. A relative borrowed it recently and had no complaints clearing the back of his property. The engine appears to be a Honda OHV clone similar to what is available for cheap at Harbor Freight. At first I was worried about the Chinese engine but after many tanks of gas, it continues to run flawlessly. If something were to happen, I know where to find a budget replacement. The leaf chute states "only leaves" but it easily handled the small twigs connected to those leaves and smaller sticks (1/4" on average). The leaf chute spring safety flap is annoying but does keep small chunks from flying out. When feeding large branches, knots and severely bent pieces will give you a headache as they jam in the small opening. Be sure to keep the chainsaw, hedge clippers or bow saw handy to trim down odd branches before feeding. The hard work will be pre-trimming branches so they will fit in the hole. Once they fit, chipping is actually fun and a nice form of stress relief. My only real complaint is the chipper tends to walk around when operating. Be sure to have a couple of heavy rocks or concrete blocks handy to brace one of the tires. Maybe a locking hub would help with this. If you need to transport the chipper and don't have a truck or cargo carrier, the leaf chute can be easily unbolted in about five minutes. Once removed, the shortened chipper will fit in the back of a wagon, SUV or backseat of a larger car. March 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Really good leaf shedder This works as advertised. I thought the screws didn't come with it and they sent replacements, no problem. Although when I started it I realized the screws were in the machine. There were some packaging issues which may have been caused by the delivery company. It was difficult to put together as far as getting things lined up. But everything did fit. I have used it a few times. It starts quickly, sheds the leaves great. The place to put the leaves in could be bigger and a little easier to use. Otherwise I would have rated it excellent. Tough to shred some sticks, but I imagine at this price range there is a limit to the opening sizes. Overall a good product that I expect to use for years. October 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A Real Timesaver I bought this chipper because I was tired of cutting up trimmings so I could put them in a trash bag. We have lots of landscaping and a one acre lot. It normally takes a month of weekends or more each spring to trim and bag the landscaping. A chipper/shredder has cut that time down to just a little more than one weekend. It also provides me the ability to do some of the tree trimming that I used to have to pay a tree service company to do. This chipper/shredder has quickly paid for itself. The unit was easy to assemble. There was one initial problem, a leaky gas tank. Brush Master prompty provided a replacement and the unit has performed very well ever since. The only feature I would like to have seen is the ability to idle the engine...on/off are the only settings. June 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome machine This is worth the money. It chews up 2" branches like nothing. Very good product for residential use. August 25, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by What I was looking for. The chipper works well for my needs. It starts easily, however I find it hard to restart if I have to shut it down for less than three hours. Assembly took longer than 15 minutes, the parts did not fit together as smoothly as they could have. I used a small piece or wax paper to help the handle assembly slide together. I have managed to shred/chip about forty feet of 6-8 foot cedar hedge in about 2 hours. I'm happy with the product over all. October 1, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good value for the money A nice entry level chipper/shredder. Sets up in about half an hour. The 2 1'2 inlet for branches is a bit small . One needs to cut them up first as most have crooks in them that exceed that limit.. I bought it primarily to shred leaves for my compost pile. I point the discharge chute into a landscape barrel which works good for me. Without the barrel it blows the shredded leaves all over the place. Especially if there is a wind. The leaf hopper takes small sticks and loose vegetation . The key here is to have them small enough so they don't jamb up the hopper. The only downside that I could see is that it is hard to pull start. This is due to the blades being connected to a heavy flywheel. If you are strong enough though it usually starts on one pull. For this reason I wouldn't recommend this product for most retired folks. July 22, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed I ordered this product online and had it delivered to my home. Assembly was not overly difficult, although some of the holes in the plastic hoppers did not exactly match the holes on the machine. After following the operating directions, I started it with just one pull. I fed it one branch to test the operation, then shut it off to work on something else. A week later when I attempted to start it, the pull rope jumped off the wheel and got caught. It locked up tight, so I had to remove the entire assembly. Then I discoverd the flywheel was made of plastic, not metal, and had warped when the rope got caught. As a result, the rope would come off the wheel every time. I spoke to an small engine mechanic who stated that it was difficult to get replacement parts for this equipment. I decided to return the product to my local Home Depot, which was easy - thank you!
