Answer:
Ideally, you want a door that fits as it is. But if you have to shave off a little, the hinge side is best. But I do believe that if you were to take off a half inch, the manufacturers would recommend taking off a quarter inch from each side.

Answer:
Howdy elcheapo,
It can be done with a wood planer or belt sander. Because this is usually for the skilled craftsmen I recommend consulting the millwork associate at The Home Depot for the right size door.

The opening is 56 inches, so if I buy two slab doors then I could cut one inch off all 4 sides then have French doors. Can this be done?

Answer:
Hi Polly,
One inch off each side is too much, it will weaken the door, you will need to special order a door in the exact size you need.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful door and Awesome Customer Service I mistakenly thought they would cut out the hinges and doorknob and was very upset to find it was a misunderstanding. I had no way to do it myself. I asked for the manager because this was a problem. Not only did he listen sympathetically but realized how the misunderstanding happened. He felt bad about it and said he would chisel out the hinges for me and he gave me the doorknob cutting kit for free. He didn't have to do anything but he did. Above the call of duty to ensure customer satisfaction. I would like to thank Paul Fortt Jr the Pro Dept Supervisor for all the time and work you put into helping me. Otherwise, I couldn't have used this door. Super nice and professional. A supervisor who does this for a customer is awesome. Mr Fortt I can't thank you enough. You represent Home Depot very well! Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by If you need to cut We'd like to replace a door (30X78) between kitchen and family room, so hired a contractor to install. We bought a door at Homedepot because Lowes has a similar French Slab door, but it won't be able to cut the bottom. January 13, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Door shrunk and warped after being hung and painted. Door shrunk and warped ~1" after being hung, primed and painted with two coats of paint. Having paid a carpenter to hang it and a painter to paint it this has NOT been a good experience! June 11, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Got new door I really love the look of this door ... I would like to out one in two more areas They could be a little cheaper but overall... Great buy It took a bit longer to install than I thought ?. As I thought the knob hole was supposed to have been pre-drilled. ... The saleswoman ... From customer device wad great to help The door people are alys too busy and a little less helpful Wish there were more helpers in the door department Thanks December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by French interior door slab Just received the door yesterday, so I haven't installed it yet. Looks solid and well made. My gripe is, when I ordered the door I was under the impression that they would come finished, because I was asked what color stain I wanted when I ordered it. So I have to do that myself. . I told them the measurements to the 2 hinges on my old door, so they did the cut outs at the proper locations. What the sales person didn't tell me is the directions say 3 hinges are required. So I have to install another hinge on the door frame and door, and chisel out for the hinge locations. That's something I haven't done before. My question is, has anyone installed this door with just 2 hinges, and is that working out ok ? . April 18, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quite good. Liked how the door came and the french windows have a plastic over the glass, the door can be finished first, then removed the plastic that looks like it was built right into it at the factory. No fuss, no muss with masking the windows for finishing. Mine seems well made, looks very good, nice wood grains. The only problems were, this is an old house, almost nothing is square and this replaced an odd door of less that 80". Suggest in certain cases such as mine you remove the old door place on top of new door, line of the top and sides and mark all the hinge, door know and latch areas, cut to fit. And it will be a snap to replace. May 27, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful doors Love the doors! Replaced my solid wood doors and brought light to the rooms and hallway. Installation was quick and easy. July 7, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Two doors, one nightmare Both doors went up easily. Manufacturers put plastic on the glass panes. They came off one door very easily. Removing it from the second door took more time (measured in hours, not minutes) than was required to prepare the door, install it, and paint it. If I had known how tough it would be, I would NEVER have purchased these units. On balance, I would recommend purchasing them, but be forewarned. December 30, 2014
