Answer:
Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. If using these fasteners for pine shutters, you may want to predrill the holes. However, you may also want to visit your local Home Depot Store to speak with a specialist who would better advise you and provide other options if needed. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 101 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Shutter fasteners Easy to use, not expensive. The only fastener that was the proper color. The problem is that they don't hold up well. Have replaced at least 20 over the past 5 or 6 years because they keep on snapping. Not sure - could be the cold weather in winter that causes them to become very brittle. August 23, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by It Matches, Fine, But . . . A shutter came loose -- the top two fasteners broke. I had to special order replacements - yuck, 10 day wait. There are three problems with this fastener -- 1. They're pretty flimsy, which means driving them into the wall can be a problem. 2. The way they're ribbed once in (or partially in) you will not get them out. If you make a mistake you MAY be able to drill it out, more likely you will have to drill another hole. This can be a problem. Your fasteners will not be parallel and will look uneven. 3. (Reference #1) Why did the first two fail? These are outdoor shutters. I would expect the fasteners to stand up to the normal pressures of weather change. June 3, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by They Do Their Job! Listen, you only buy these when you need them, and they're pretty much the only game in town. You'll have to paint them whatever color you need them to be and then put painter's tape over the head before you bang them in. Make sure you use the primer plus paint or the color will come off when you peel the tape. For what they are, what they cost and what they do, it would be tough to find better. August 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by The Worst Fastener I've Ever Used I was attempting to replace the old ones that broke, but once these are about halfway into the hole, they begin to bend and will not insert any further. I tried everything I could think of, but fighting with these fasteners from the top of a 32 foot extension ladder was becoming dangerous. I'll return these and use reliable concrete anchors. I'll probably save some money. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well designed product The old "shutter spikes" became brittle over time (13 years) and some of them broke and needed replacement. The only issue with installing the new "spikes" was getting parts of the old "spikes" out which I solved by drilling into them. The old "spikes" either broke into pieces or pulled out with the drill when I drilled into them and then the new "spikes" pushed into place for a secure fit. July 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by unnecessary They recommend these to go with the shutters but they came with all you need. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to install..... RUSTPROOF !!!! Great for seaside shutters...... Not as durable as metal screws, but do not rust and very easy to replace !!!! August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simple to use, does the job Drill the hole, insert the fastener and use a portable drill to seat. 16 shutters installed in less than a hour with these fasteners without and problem. July 26, 2016
