Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Does not work! This does not work. Do not buy this if you want to use the dirt pods that it comes with! Advertised "Just add water and they will grow"'. It has been 2 days since adding warm water and half the dirt disks are still the same size, some are starting to grow and none are full size. August 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Switching Brands You get what you pay for? Unlike others all of my pellets expanded. None of my seeds germinated. I know it's not the seeds. I've used the same packages all season and each type of plant has sprouted in my potting soil. While I collect the last of that fruit I thought I'd get a head start on my second crop. Nope. I'm picking up the Jiffy pellets that HD carries to replace these Burpee ones. The customer reviews on the Burpee website who were unhappy said they've all had luck with Jiffy. I'm also not going to use the watering mat next time. It does keep the soil moist, but I think that might be part of the problem, too. A lot of the seeds turned to complete mush - I think they rotted! So if you need a super soaked pod this is for you but most seeds will drown or rot in it. July 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Seed Starter (So far) Not sure why people were having trouble, but I started about 36 Japanese Cucumber plants from seeds with this kit, and they have gone from seed to sprout in under 2 weeks (Started in February), then after about a month, I had these transferred to larger cups for hardening off (mid-March, but lost one seedling for some reason unbeknownst to me), then I had these transferred to planting boxes by mid-April. It is now end of May. They are already climbing the trellises and poles I've set up and I've already started harvesting from at least 5 of them (The others are still slowly catching up, but only because they're a bit limited in space). Definitely need to be careful about the orientation of the pellets when starting them out though. I had one expand the wrong way and nearly broke the box (Whoops...). Can be a bit messy, but what's gardening without a bit of a mess? Some were a bit more stubborn but nothing a bit of warm water flooding and stirring with a bamboo stick can't fix. What I did mostly to make sure the seeds sprouted was that I made sure that they were indoors for most of the first few weeks, had a heat pad under it to make sure the plants stayed warm and the lid was on it (It was still pretty cold indoors since I had them sit on a shelf near the back door/den), and then made sure that the water container under it actually had water (The air here is dry, so I have to check it every 4 or 5 days). Also, during the second week of growth, I began adding a bit of water-soluble food with the water, so that gave them extra nutrients, and I took them outside to bask in the sun with the lid on. There was a teeny bit of a mold issue, but this I countered by spraying a fine mist of rubbing alcohol to keep it controlled. I didn't spray the plants, but I did spray the dirt that surrounds it. Not something I would recommend, but it is a quick fix for quick mold control. I'm sure someone has a better idea that wouldn't endanger the plant. Really great product for beginner gardeners, and probably one of my better experiences with seeding kits that are easy, not too messy, and only need to be tended to every few days in terms of water. Just wish it was made of something a bit more durable so that I can keep using these every year. It's perfect for starting my seasonal veggies! June 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't puirchase I have used seed starter pellet kits from home depot in the past with excellent results. So I picked this one up thinking it would work well - despite it being rather pricey. The QR code didn't work and then when I set it up the pellets never expanded ( well 2 out of 36 did ). I added more warm water and still nothing. So I came to the Home Depot website to see many other reviews saying the same thing. It's too messy now to bother returning - what a waste of time & $11. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not recommended Although most seed sprouted, transplanting them was a failure. There was no easy way to remove the cells. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Working Very Well So Far I planted broccoli, lettuce, spinach, and pepper seeds in this kit about 2 weeks ago. All are flourishing and are nearly up to the greenhouse roof. I have not had to add water once since the initial addition of water at the time of planting. ONLY THING TO WORRY ABOUT is to make sure the dirt/growing material disks are facing the proper direction. They are hard to work with if they are not facing the correct direction. April 20, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by 2 stars is being very generous I'm giving two stars instead of one because I have the feeling the innovative watering mat may work. However Burpee should stick to selling seeds and leave the hardware to someone else. Half of the pellets didn't expand "in seconds". Many never expanded after 10 minutes. QR code on package doesn't work at all. Printed guarantee is a joke - read it for a good laugh. I'm not usually so negative but this is a product that disappoints in nearly every respect. We'll see if the seeds sprout. April 10, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Sort of works! I had a major problem transplanting my seedlings. The fiber soil doesnot hold together so although the plants have a good root system, when you come to put them in a bigger pot, the soil just breaks away and it really shocks the seedlings. Getting the seedlings out of the tray is another major problem as you can't tip the tray, you have to pull on the plants. Also, living in San Diego I put the tray outside to harden off the seedlings and the clear plastic top just sits on top of the tray, it doesn't stay on and of course blows away. March 29, 2016
