Answer:
Yes, a heat mat is useful when you are growing pepper seeds indoors. These will generally raise the soil temperature by about 10 degrees from the surrounding temperature. Remove the heat mat after the seeds germinate. Happy Gardening!

Answer:
We would not recommend fertilizing your seedling until they are 3-4" tall and in that case we recommend a liquid balanced houseplant fertilizer at about 1/4 - 1/2 strength. Miracle Grow is too strong for seedlings.

Answer:
If your seedlings have mildew on the foliage you should probably start a new batch because they are so young and are not likely to recover. If, however, you are referring to a white surface mold on the seed starting soil, this will not damage the seedlings and they can be transplanted as they are.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 38 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Waste of money, worst kit I've ever used I've used the Burpee 36-cell tray in the past and had been pleased, so I gave the 72-cell tray a try since we expanded our garden this year. As other reviewers have stated, the soil pellets don't expand and absorb water evenly and needed to be manally "fluffed". I too had issues with mold/mildew and excessive wetness of the soil pods, leading to seedlings failing to sprout or dying - I have never had less than 100% sprouting success with the 36-cell tray. The seedlings never developed a strong root system, even after 6 weeks (good old New England weather delayed transplanting a few weeks). This became obvious at planting time, when this tray proved its uselessness in spades. I couldn't get the seedlings out of the tray without destroying the root ball, or ultimately cutting the tray into pieces. Of the seedlings that actually sprouted and lived to move outside (maybe 75%), I lost another 25% after transplanting thanks to weak and ruined roots. I found this kit frustrating while indoors, and infuriating outdoors. I will not be using this it in the future, and highly recommend using another product. June 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Product could be strudier 72-Cell Self-Watering Greenhouse Kit was a real disappointment. The assembly as a whole was rather flimsy. The instructions state to place the kit in the area where you want it to stay before planting and watering. That is a great idea considering the fact that it is so flimsy. The initial watering of the kit was easy enough, but the manufacturers could have made it a lot more convenient to replace water in the reservoir if they had left room on the sides to add water. The expanding pellets were less than effective. After adding water they only expanded to fill about half the cup and I had to add extra potting soil to ensure the seeds were set correctly. The clear plastic covering did not fit securely or firmly over the kit and would become dislodged at the slightest bump. I would recommend not wasting your money on this product. June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My grandson is thrilled! I bought the greenhouse with my grandson. His Gran and I want to encourage his interest in gardening. We picked out a variety of vegetable and flower seeds and worked together to plant them. He's enjoyed watching the seeds sprout and grow. It's been educational and a nice project for all of us. Now it's about time to transplant. May 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed already I purchased this Burpee seed starting tray at Home Depot. After CAREFULLY following instructions, the pellets did not only not expand in "seconds" to fill the tray, none of them expanded to fill the tray. A few expanded to resemble fat cigars stuck inside the tray, with space all around them. Despite pouring much more warm water than recommended, and waiting and waiting, it was clear they were not going to expand. I ended up having to break them up with a fork, and even then, the amount of dirt/peat only filled the individual cups about half way, so I had to add some potting soil to make them viable for planting. Not impressed! March 4, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Waste of money The self watering is a joke. The water never leachs into the soil. I also cant seem to find any seed pellets that go with the kit for a second use. Over all i would suggest using a egg carton and a pan of water. April 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Tried and true This tray is the easiest I have used to start seedlings in my basement. Check water daily though I know it won't need to be refilled for at least ten days. April 5, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Go with the Jiffy self-watering kit. I bought one each of the Jiffy kit and the Burpee kit. The Jiffy one seems to be of higher quality, and costs $2 less. Its pellets also have the benefit of being wrapped in a light mesh making transplanting a little easier. April 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not for me I was really excited about getting this kit. I wanted to get some seed started for my garden. Unfortunately, this kit was a disaster for me All I grew was a mold that killed a few seeds that were actually growing. It was a waste of my money April 5, 2016
