Janey, I don't know for sure... but I noticed the same thing as Walmart used to be one of the cheapest suppliers of hot pepper suet. Also Tractor Supply...but they don't seem to have it anymore either. My guess is that it didn't sell well enough and so they lost money...that's my guess because last year I got about 4 12-packs at Tractor Supply when they clearanced it out at 67 cents a piece!!! I drove to the 2 closest stores and bought them out. Just finished the last cake this week and now I'm in the same predicament. Looks like Home Depots' bulk price is the best unless someone is offering a close out that isn't listed online. Read Less

Why the switch?

This question is from Hot Pepper Delight 0.7 lb. Wild Bird Suet

Two HD stores I went to in Portland had switched products from the one described here. Still marked hot pepper delight, it contains no chili peppers, only red pepper. Not the same. Worse, the main ingredient is not suet but corn. Suet is listed on the label as the fourth ingredient. Birds don't seem to like HD's switcheroo, and neither do I.
Read the label before you buy.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 24 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Squirrels won't touch it, but neither will the cardinals or the blue jays My biggest concern was the squirrels eating this since I have a bunch of them in my yard. The good news is that the squirrels don't want anything to do with it. The bad news is that neither do the cardinals or blue jays. There was a black (grackle or something like that) bird that picked at it once, but that was about it. I live in South Florida and I don't see many small songbirds around, so maybe they would like it more. The price was low so no big deal. August 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent product Only birds eat this suet. Squirrels and other mammals are repelled by it. If you want to feed just birds, I recommend the hot pepper suet. August 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is the best suet. Squirells don't like it. attracts many birds, they seem to love it. However it does go quickly especially when the bigger birds find. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Squirrel-Proof, Birds Love It After several weeks battling with squirrels, I discovered that birds are not affected by hot pepper while mammals will experience the full effects. This is the ONLY suet cake I will use! The Home Depot price is also super competitive, maybe 1/3 of what you can find online. April 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best suet we've ever had My sister says her birds will eat no other suet. We love it because the squirrels leave it alone for the birds to eat. Lasts longer than non hot suet yet the birds are at the feeder everyday, all day. May 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Finally, a squirrel free bird food! I have been using these hot pepper suet cakes in my three hanging basket containers, two per cage, for at least two years. The birds love them and the squirrels leave them alone. This is a great product, reasonably priced. Home Depot is the only local provider I have been able to find. May 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good suet. . . . but there is a better cheaper one out there! This is a very good suet, that the birds seem to like. If you have squirrels that can get to your suet cage, then this is the product you want because the squirrels will leave it alone. From that standpoint it earner 5 stars from me. However if you want a suet that attracts more birds, go buy the Royal Wings Orange No Melt Suet from Tractor Supply. It is cheaper and the birds like it better than this hot pepper one. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by HURRAH SQUIRRELS DON"T After mixing dry hot pepper with the bird seed to deter squirrels from raiding and chewing thru my bird feeders I thought i would try this pepper suet! Birds fight over it,they LOVE it! !!ave never seen birds fight over any other suet I have put out for them and this is late Spring. So can imagine the fighting I will have this winter over it. And have not had one squirrel come around, not even to sample seeds that have fallen to ground. Bit pricey I feel as can get other suet at another store for much less. But in the long run well worth the price if it keeps squirrels away and the birds love it. June 5, 2015
