If you need a different bit for groved deck boards [#0345089] can that bit be used for both applications, groved and non groved. What would be the result?
Asked by: SquanRob
We recommend only using the CAMO Grooved Board Driver Bit with grooved deck boards and the standard CAMO Driver Bit with non-grooved boards. The Grooved Board Driver Bit has a higher shoulder on the bit allowing the screw to be driven deeper into the groove of the board. That is not needed when you are using CAMO Edge Deck Screws on a non-grooved deck board. We highly advise against using the standard CAMO Driver Bit when installing grooved deck boards because the shoulder of the bit is not designed to allow the screw to be seeded as deep into the groove of the board as needed for proper installation and structural integrity. Doing so will impair performance and not produce the desired results. The standard CAMO Driver Bit comes free in all CAMO Edge Deck Screw pails. The CAMO Grooved Board Driver Bit is available separately for purchase. Thank you for your question about this CAMO product! -Team CAMO

Can you use this tool with grooved deck boards and if if the screws are hidden does their color matter?
Asked by: SquanRob
Thank you for your question about CAMO. Yes! The CAMO Edge Deck Fastening System can be used to install grooved deck boards. Any of the CAMO Tools, including the CAMO Marksman Pro-X1 Tool, can be used when installing grooved deck boards. The most important thing to keep in mind is that when using CAMO to install grooved decking, is that you will need to use the CAMO Grooved Board Driver Bit (model #0345089). This is different than the free bit that come in every CAMO Edge screw pail. The CAMO Grooved Board Driver Bit can be purchased separately in a 2-bit pack. You can tell the difference between the bits because the Grooved Board Driver Bit will have a red ring around the top. Also, in regards to your question about screw color...you are correct! Because the screws are hidden in the edge of the deck board, the color does not matter in terms of trying to match it to the color of your board. However, the color does indicate the type of coating on the screws. CAMO Edge Deck Screws are either green or black. The green coating represents our ProTech Coated Deck Screws (carbon coated) and can be used for most decking products. The black coating is our 315 Stainless Steel Coating. We recommend you use CAMO Edge Stainless Steel Deck Screws if you are installing decking in a marine or coastal environment, or if you are installing cedar or a hardwood deck board such as IPE. Does the gun use regular decking screws ?

Asked by: Moose
No, regular decking screws cannot be used with CAMO tools. CAMO tools, such as the CAMO Marksman Pro-X1 Tool, position CAMO Hidden Fasteners for side-angle entry into the deck board. The CAMO Hidden Fasteners are specially engineered to work the CAMO Tools. Using other branded deck screws with the CAMO Tools will impair performance and not produce the desired results. 1/16" spacing or 3/16"?

Asked by: Dan
The CAMO Marksman Pro-X1 Tool (#0345002) provides automatic 1/16" spacing. This is ideal for use with treated lumber and other soft woods where you would prefer a smaller gap. Another option is the CAMO Marksman Pro Tool (#0345001) which provides automatic 3/16" spacing. It was designed for installing composite or PVC deck boards where a larger gap is required by the deck board manufacturer. It can also be used with treated lumber or soft woods such as cedar in the event you would prefer a larger gap. The final spacing option is a zero gap which can be achieved by using the CAMO Edge Tool (#0345020). This is ideal for installing treated lumber, particularly wet treated lumber that is going to shrink as it dries. This tool can also be used with secondary spacers in the event you would prefer to gap your deck boards. Thank you for viewing this CAMO product! -Team CAMO

Customer Reviews

Marksman Pro-X1 Tool is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised This tool and the screws you have to use with it is surprisingly a great team. The screws are small and show very little if at all. The angle they go in keep the board firmly attached. The screws are flat at the end so they drill in the wood and don't spread and split the wood like a regular screw does. Only two issues are the handle is a bit weak They should have supported it better. and the price for this simple but effective tool is too expensive -$40. Someone had a great idea and put it into production. We need more of that. Oh, on a side note this method takes probably twice as long as screwing but the results in my opinion are long term and worth it. I got this model tool because it has only a 1/8" spacer, which is the way to go for PT wood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must use this tool! This tool not only worked well, but it saved me from drilling over 700 pilot holes. I love that you do not see screws. I used this tool for a new deck, used 2x6 boards, make sure you get the 2 5/8 screws

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do it yourselfer's best friend This tool made my decking super straight and beautiful without any visable screws. Everyone comments on how nice it looks. It was also a breeze to operate and a one man show made it a snap. You simply load the screws and the bit is the perfect length to sink the screw andyou can't oversink even if you tried. The tool makes it easier for one person to keep the tension on the board as well because it holds the screw in perfect postion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing rocks! Installing Trex enhance grooved decking, we were using FastenMaster Versaclips and they were horrible! They were impossible to get in straight and consistently with the required 45 degree angle and loosened as the next board was pushed in. We were lucky to find a youtube video showing the Camo tool and practically ran to HD to pick up this tool and accompanying screws and camo driver bits. Our deck looks great now. Thanks Camo and HD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product, great look excellent system, you have to use the Camo screws, but it's a great way to get a nearly concealed fastener without proprietary clips. I was using 5/4 cedar decking and the 1 5/8" stainless fasteners worked well. It's a fast install with the spacers built in. You don't have to lean on or apply pressure to the handle, I can see where it would fail if you do. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Well built deck screw guide. Using the Camo screws and drive bit makes installing pressure treated lumber very easy. The spacing guides make lining up the boards a breeze. Properly installed, you can get at the screws to remove a single board if necessary. No fasteners showing makes for a clean look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decking made easy Having a 20 year old deck that had seen better days, my wife and I decided to rebuild it with PVC planking, railings, and trim. In looking around at the various fastening systems available for this type of material and their associated user reviews, we chose the Camo system. There were a few issues mentioned concerning the tool handles breaking after extended use and the self drilling screws breaking after installation. It appeared that the manufacturer had addressed each oft them, redesigned or modified the products and corrected the problems. After having installed over 1100 linear feet of planking, consuming over 1700 fasteners there were no issues encountered. I will mention that since the PVC planks are 1/2" thinner than the pressure treated lumber they replaced, the screw holes for the fasteners show themselves more rather than being hidden as shown in the videos. Not a big problem, but would rather have had them more out of sight. All-in-all very happy with the results.
