Customer Questions & Answers

How many tomatoes would one container hold? Is 4 too many?

Asked by: gardenista
I planted 4 tomato plants last year, big boy & big girl, and it was too much for the container because of the sheer size of the species when they matured. Staking them was also a challenge. This year I'm going w/2 tomatoes per box with peppers & parsley as companions. And I'm setting stakes out at planting time so I can cope with them before they become unruly. These containers are wonderful.

How heavy/sturdy is it? We have strong winds with storms and I don't want to have to move the planter when it is windy.

Asked by: Nelster
I've used these sucesfully for the past two summers here in CT. Once the boxes are full of dirt and plants, they are very heavy.

Is this water proof on the bottom? My porch is very sunny, however is wood..will this work?

I need to be sure the water does not leak out o f the bottom. Is this waterproof, self-contained? I want to grow tomatoes on the front porch...but it's a wood porch. I do not want it to sit on the wood. Thanks!
Asked by: Susila
I have used two of these on my wood deck and no water leakage unless you overflow the fill capacity when watering. My boxes have casters so they are off the deck anyway.

I read the reviews and followed the steps and suggestions carefully. The boxes can be moved around my deck very easily if needed. I had great success growing veggies with these city pickers boxes. I've used these for the last two summers. It's a lot less work and hassle than growing veggies in my raised beds. I've just about given up on those. I have two planters and plan to buy two more. I highly recommend you try these. They are easy, fun and rewarding for all ages and gardening skill levels. Just be careful you don't end up with more cherry tomatoes than you can eat, like I did.

I have had my City Pickers for 6 years and have grown strawberries, lettuce, greens, onions, etc, anything that does not need staking. Planters are in great shape. I will clean the outside every year and they will look new again. I recommend to put a plastic mulch over the potting mix, it is part of how the system works for the type of planter. Because the rubber band or elastic rots during the growing season in the sun... Cut some black or white mulch 24"x28". Do not use plastic garbage bags, light gets through and weeds can grow underneath. I tuck the plastic between the potting mix and the inside wall of the planter, using a flat plastic spade, fold the corner where the water tube is at and tuck around it. It also makes it that it can catch any rainfall and then self fill with water.

Wonderful set up and easy to follow directions, HOWEVER, within a week one of the caster wheels broke off so now I've had to remove all of them. We need to be able to move it every now and then so this would have been perfect for us. The garden becomes so heavy that the small plastic casters should not be used in an application like this. For the price I paid I would not recommend it until the issue is resolved.

The big rubber band that is supposed to hold the plastic did not last a full season plus it simply did not hold the black plastic in place. The sides bowed once soil was put in it. Tomatoes generally need staking or some type of cage or support. The depth of this box prohibited stakes or cages from working properly. Maybe if you wanted to do lettuce or some small veggie it might be okay. Sorry but it just doesn't work for a square foot/raised bed type of system. The pictures are very misleading. Better stuff out there.

I've been growing veggies in Earthboxes for a very long time. My oldest ones are well over 2 decades old and still functioning. I'm always looking for ways to expand my urban gardening so I was thrilled to find these City Pickers that are less expensive than Earthboxes. After reading so many reviews about the casters breaking, I'll set mine up without using the casters at all. I hope the drainage on these are adequate, so I don't need to drill more holes. As I mentioned, I've been using Earthboxes for well over 2 decades and my current garden area is a configuration of raised beds with earthboxes around the perimeter. I've found that mosquitoes do breed in the reservoirs, so I drop a spoonful of mosquito bits down the watering tubes now and then. I'm not sure if I'll set these up outside the fenced garden area or in an area that's lined and has river rock and various containers. I purchased two of these and haven't set them up yet so I can't comment about longevity or how well they grow things. I do know that I won't trust the casters and either place I set them up, I wouldn't need to move them around. Some of my earthboxes have casters and some do not. Those that do have never had a problem with casters coming out or breaking. The ones that don't, I just drag when necessary. My brother built my current garden and he used a dolly to move the earthboxes to dump the dirt and move them back when filled with new soil.

The picture of tomatoes planted with lettuce does not fit with the instructions given - they cannot be planted together according to the enclosed planting instructions. The rubber bands provided to hold the undersized black plastic sheet in place didn't even last 1 week! The instructions on placement of the fill tube are non-specific as to which corner of the box to use (not the grid) resulting in my incorrectly placing the fill tube on one of the boxes, and inadequate filling of the reservoir. I like the casters on the box - it makes it easy to rotate the box as the plants grow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are going to give us a great garden this year. We are very pleased with this purchase. We are Seniors and last year we did not have a garden because it had become to hard for us. We did some research and found these on several different sites but at a much higher price than Home Depot. We purchased 3 of them. We had another large planter and after seeing these made some changes and now we have four large beds. Our son built them a platform to sit in at waist level. No more bending over to weed. It is great. (pictures attached) We bought our plants and four large bag of potting soil and things are coming along. Shipping was fast, they came in 5 days. Yes we would recommend these for anyone but especially for Seniors.
