Questions & Answers

for the compac twin 4,000w 240v. what size breaker? what size wire?

Asked by: wally
Lots of discussions on this topic. Below is the NEC code for various wire gauges. The "80% max load" is a safety factor used by NEC for circuit continuous usage (joule heating) concerns. I wired my heater with 10/2 since the circuit length is 35 feet. Overkill, you can decide but for an extra $10 in wiring costs, I sleep just fine with this heater running several hours continuously in my cabin. I have it on a 20A breaker and have had no issues with the circuit tripping. 240V (US) (@ 80% max load) (50ft run or less) Gauge Amps Watts #16 9 2160 #14 12 2880 #12 16 3840 #10 24 5760 #8 32 7680 #6 40 9600 #4 48 11520

Does this have to be installed on an inside wall or can it be install on an out side wall?

Asked by: Bassoneman
I am not aware of any limitations on interior vs exterior wall installation site. I installed mine as a replacement for an old unit that failed - installed in an exterior wall. The new one is in the same spot and is working like a champ.

Can this heater be controlled by an off/on wall switch?

I want to be able to turn it off in the winter when we are not using the screened porch. I learned that thie knob only goes down to 50 degrees but does not actually turn off. Can I connect this to a switch to turn it off?
Asked by: scrappy
Sure can! Get a double pole switch rated at 20 amps and put in-line.

Installation was easy and instructions were great. First test brought my 18' X 14' bedroom from 61 to 70 degrees in 8 minutes when the temp outside was 48. It has good airflow and the air coming out of the unit is HOT. Thought it would be a little quieter. The noise is like background white noise, just a little louder. It is certainly quieter than a 5000 BTU A/C window unit. I like it and recommend it.

I had been looking at this heater for a year or so before I finally purchased it. I must say it was well worth it! I was using a "garage heater" in my 420 sqft workshop and it was not getting the job done - It was loud and did not keep the temperature constant at all. This heater is very quiet, does not interrupt conversation nor watching a TV. Fans are powerful enough to stir the air in the room, not just a few feet from it. The thermostat was better, but I opted to get a digital one that I placed on an adjacent wall later on. I absolutely love this heater! The thermostat I got was a "Honeywell Aube TH450/TH305".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy install, impressive performance Installed in a poorly-insulated back room used as an office. 240V circuit was in place, left over from old baseboard heat. Drywall cut and stud mounting was easy, as was electrical connection. 4000W Cadet quickly heated room from 55F to 70F, and held temperature through the day by running approx. 10 minutes on and 30 minutes off. This kept the temp between 68-70F. For an 8-hour day at $0.12/kWh... my math shows about $1.50/day operating cost. A bargain to heat an icebox of a room!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Com-Pak Twin, In-Wall Fan Forced Electric Heater, The heater was very easy to install. It was a replacement for a 35 year old electric heater I had in my office that quit working. I really like the way it heats and the blowers are awesome. I think that it would have no trouble heating the 600 sq. ft. they claim it will heat. The only thing that I don't like is that there is no way to totally shut the heater off. You can put the switch all the way over to the off position and if it gets cold enough it will still come on. The other older ones I have in the house have a positive off. Overall I really like this heater and I am going to buy a couple more of them to replace some of the older electric heaters I have in other rooms that have gone bad after 35 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good price, easy to install, working great This was a great purchase. We were looking for reliable heating source to supplement, or replace, our natural gas wall heater in a 850 square feet cabin at altitude of 7000 feet. It does get very cold up there in the winter. After reading very positive reviews for COM-PAK we decided that this is the right product. We bought it on line, it was delivered to Home Depot when promised. It was easy to install, by a licensed electrician and it worked like a charm. Since our wall is not thick enough we also used the adapter for mounting heater on the wall. The adapter worked great too. That night we used it as only source of heat. It worked great, it was worm and cozy in the cabin, and no smell of the gas. It also warmed up the cabin in 15-20 minutes. With gas wall heater it took up to the hour. I recommend this product to anyone who needs a well priced, compact, and quick heating source.

Easy to install and made a big difference. 4000 watts is 12500 BTU in the same league as a propane wall heater. You can't get that much heat from a 120 V heater. The thermostat works once set, but it is not calibrated, so it takes some trial and error.
