Customer Questions & Answers

What is the duty cycle of this compressor

Asked by: Goldude
Hello folks and thanks for your answers. I found the answer in the manual. It says it has a 50% duty cycle. Don't know where California Tools got their info.

Use for roofing nailer

How often will this run...nail shots before it starts recovery? I need an aluminum tank, etc due to my proximity to the sea...thoughts?
Asked by: Wetdog77
Thank you for the interest in the California Air Tools 4620A Ultra Quiet & Oil-Free Air Compressors. Unfortunately there are too many variables to give you a good time. The brand and model of the gun, the CFM needed and the speed you nail all play a role. As mentioned by the person below 90 PSI-120 PSI take 20 seconds and to fill the tank from empty to full 60 seconds. Please contact us if you have any other questions.

length of use before motor cycling?

I will be using an air tool that runs constantly at 1.25CFM @ 37PSI. Can you tell me how long with a full tank the tool will run before the compressor kicks on, APPROX.
Asked by: AZEGGS
This compressor is pretty fast for a tiny unit. But it cycles on and off entirely too much. I have had nothing but problems with mine. It sometimes kicks on at around 100 PSI and stops at 105 PSI . It kicks on when you plug in a hose or a tool. I would not purchase one.

4.6 Gal. 2 HP Ultra Quiet and Oil-Free Aluminum Twin Tank Air Compressor is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 66.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny! I did an immense amount of research before jumping into air compressor tools. I checked through all major retail outlets and also some online only ship-direct warehouses and this one by far is the best value per dollar out there. It's very quiet, oil-less (practically maintenance free), has two quick connects, and for it's size puts out a high amount of CFM. When you start to compare compressors you realize how important the CFM rating is and this one has one of the highest for the price range, HP, and tank size. Short of shelling out $1000 for a high volume, high HP compressor this is easily the best value out there if it is in your price range. Plenty of power for my (fairly beefy) IR impact wrench, air chisel, air ratchet, nail guns, airing up vehicle and bicycle tires, etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as stated in the ad Had mine shipped to Home Depot to avoid a possibility of poor shipping. Came to me in perfect shape. No damage, but there was a loose pressure switch (sits behind the ON/OFF switch box). Using a dB (A and C) meter, sound was measured at 68dBC (dBC includes freq below 500Hz dBA is greater than 500Hz). Note: Every 10 dB is considered a perceived human hearing of doubling of loudness so the Husky 4 gal equiv. (1.5HP, 3.8 @40 2.8 @90) is more than twice as loud as this, for example. I have a 4CFM sander from Harbor freight (25% duty cycle so really it requires 12 to 16 CFM for on all the time performance). I charged the tanks and ran the sander without stopping and it seemed to maintain a good grinding ability at 45 psi without stopping. On the Husky 4gal the same stopped after 10 seconds, meaning I could stop the rotation of the sander with my hand. I have a blower. I can hold it ON and the air blew constant at 45 psi, down from 123 psi. The outlet diameter of the blower is about 3/32" so it is pretty wide open. The air use at 45 psi was very good and very usable so I didn't care. The tank filled from 45 to 123 psi in less than 30 seconds, I would say. It is astonishingly quick to charge. From 0 to 123 it is amazing how quick it is compared to all the other compressors I have used. It is heavy so I would not want steel tanks. It lifts with balance, however. Picking it up when it is hot could be an issue. The motor looks to be of great quality. Overall, I think the build is equal to any I have seen at Home Depot so I have no complaints. From the front it is aesthetically nice as well, better than the pictures on the websites. Dials and so on are equivalent in quality to others. I have no concern because this stuff is easy to replace with better if that is what I wish to do in the future. The parts are not expensive to upgrade, that is. Mine came with the new air release valve design California Air Tools just came out with. It was much better than that found on the Porter-Cable pan compressor which, btw, is about three times as loud as this compressor. That compressor you cannot have in the same room without having your ears ring. Anyway, it is easy to drain. I wanted Alum tanks because I plan to leave it charged so I don't want rust in the tanks. I left it charged and their was no drop in pressure at all so I was lucky with seals, I guess. The motor gets very hot. You will not be able to touch it after about 15 min of 100% on time. They say in the manual that you can have it on 100% for one hour. The filters are made of metal, not plastic. If you twist them, you will see what looks to be a mini paper -- car like-- air filter. I guess this can be replaced as the filters are made to twist in half and the paper filters, serviceable. I guess you could blow the filters out? In any case, these are not like the red filters you can get at Harbor Freight which are used for Powder Coating. I want to try Soda Blasting. I think it would work as the volume of air at 40 psi is 7CFM. I use a 12CFM air compressor to do this in a high dollar blasting cabinet and I have to dial that down to 40PSI for a better finish so I know I can be happy at 40 psi, and because the Harbor Freight 15 gal soda blaster is rated at 7 CFM at 40, I should be OK with this compressor. As my sanding tool eats air like crazy and since it seemed to be working -- good enough to sand anything I need -- at 40 psi, I believe the air is 7 cfm and believe, therefore, that the soda blasting tank should work. Overall, this is the best compressor I have used and I have used many. I don't know how long this will last. I say I'm concerned because of the temp of the motor when used heavily. However, because all other compressors I have used have plastic over the motor, I would guess that they also got very hot so I do not have a comparison for this concern. The sound is no louder than an 10" house fan set on High. I would say it is quieter, in fact. I chose this over the 10 gal 2HP California Air Tools compressor equiv. as the 10 gal does not give you any more than about 20 seconds more of time before the motor runs again. That is not worth the weight of a ten gallon steel tank. My air tools are likely going to make the compressor run all the time anyway, but it is rated for 1 hour so I should be fine and because it is so darn quiet, why should I care that the motor is on? The use of the tool is 3 time louder so why care that the motor is on as I can't even hear it over the tool? They say the motor lasts longer than the traditional, as it is electric, so if this becomes so, I will never own another type again as the sound and high CFM of this compressor is hard to fact, I don't think it has been, yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Very Quite This is the quitest oiless compressor I have ever owned. Had one part broke when recieved, called customer service and another one was sent very quickly. This unit does pull more amps than stated so I couldn't run it with my generator, but I am still going to keep it and replace a very loud rigid brand in the shop. Overall great compressor, would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super quiet, fast compressor. I was skeptical of going with a different brand than the usual dewalt, porter cable, etc, but I'm more than impressed with the compressor. It is, as they advertise, super quiet. I can talk on the phone standing next to it. It is much faster recharging than any other compressor I've used or seen in the field. It would have no problem running multiple framing guns or roofing guns. The only thing I don't love about it is that it takes a bit more power to start up than my older one, but its far superior in every other way. Direct plug-in or heavy gauge extension cord works 98% of the time Slightly heaver than I expected, but again, for the speed, quiet and overall quality, I don't mind an extra pound or two in the least.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This is quiet but may have problems at the onset. Purchased in Nov. 2013, I looked at numerous products and read many reviews before purchasing this compressor. What other reviewers said about shipping was true. This came in a single box with no styrofoam protection on the sides. The brass pressure switch adjustment valve wore a hole the size of my thumb through the box but luckily it wasn't damaged. The set-up instructions are very poor and the assembly view drawings very small to determine the parts and their number. After running the compressor for one hour, a pressure hose from the pressure switch to the air manifold developed a leek. Upon inspection, the line was resting against the heat fins located on top of the pump motor and the slight vibration and heat caused the leek to develop. In addition, the air fitting was turned toward the pump and the line was just long enough to reach. Very poor planning and engineering with a disregard to improving quality and inspection. I did get an immediate service tech without waiting and told him of the situations. He was polite and said there would be improvements in their shipping boxes this Jan. 2014. He sent me the parts I needed in two days. This is made in China for this USA company and the lack to basic quality control and improvement hasn't seemed too concerning since these comments are similar to many others in the past. I thought they would have corrected many issues and improved their product ... but it is Chinese!! I rate this as three stars since it is very quiet ( one reason for purchase) but priced high for the lack of quality control and shipping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Quiet Even with low noise the product delivers considerable air volume and maintained consistent pressure. A good addition to my garage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultra Quiet indeed. Super quiet. Recovers quickly. Could be build heavier duty, but it's nice and light for carrying. Definitely recommend.
