Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy for a beginning - buy extra I read other reviews of this vendor's products and many complain about the factory quality. They say consistency is a good thing, so you can count on needing at least 20% more than you think you need. I have 17 stairs, bought 20 Cap-a-Treads to cover my errors and had 2 treads damaged right out of the package (10%). Then in the process of cutting them, I had 2 break at the nose seam (10%). So now I'm down one stair on my project :( Good thing Home Depot took back the damaged treads. I watched the video about 4 times then got started. It took me a couple hours to get the first stair done as I had to learn what to do - measure, template, cut, test fit, repeat. One I installed 5 of them, I was knocking them out in about 15-20 minutes (riser and tread). The whole project took me 3 days with lots of stair climbing :) Warning: The video warns of two different sizes of nosing. Either I got lucky and ordered the right one (rare), or Home Depot only offers the bigger size to prevent unnecessary returns. Only sad thing I can think of about this whole project is it shows what builders can get away with when they know they are putting down carpet. I spent most of a day prepping the surfaces (scraping off plaster, driving in screws, reshaping drywall) before putting down the treads, and an hour afterwards filling in sloppy drywall cuts that were now exposed. Now I get to learn how to stain stair rails . . . Pros: Nice appearance Easy to install Cons: Seams break easily You will have to repaint unless you have a quality home with perfectly square walls May 8, 2014
