Customer Questions & Answers

If I need to cover 13 steps, what would be total price?

Asked by: Gary
Hello and thank you for your interest in our product. To cover 13 stairs, assuming you did not need any open-ended treads (Left or right side returns), you would need both treads and risers. White risers retail for a little less each than coordinating risers. 13 treads and white risers would run $819 whereas 13 treads and the same color coordinating riser would run $910. Neither of these prices include tax or installation. Your savings with this product typically comes on the installation and maintenance side. The average labor rate to install Cap A Tread is about $25-$30 per stair, whereas the labor rate to install laminate planks and stairnose on stairs is about $90-$100 per stair. That's because Cap A Tread 'caps' over your existing stairs without any need to modify them structurally. The old method of installing stairnose requires a square edge and therefore, you would have to rip off any existing overhang, which is very labor intensive and also violates building code. With Cap A Tread, simply pull off your old carpet, pad, tack strip and any staples, cut each Cap A Tread tread and riser to width and depth and glue them down using Heavy Duty Liquid Nail in alternating order starting with the riser on the bottom stair (detailed video instructions are linked to this product). Additionally, Cap A Tread has a 20 year finish warranty as it really never needs to be refinished. If you installed wood treads on your staircase, they typically need to be refinished every 10 years.

Why can't I find this product in Type 2 Cap A Tread?

The installation video says there is a Type 2 tread required for 1 1/2" thick existing strairs to be covered. I can not find the Saybrook Oak in Type 2 treads. Can it be special ordered? What is the ordering number? Thanks
Asked by: GarryB
Hello and thank you for your interest in our product. My apologies for the delay. Currently we only offer Type 2 Cap A Tread as a Special Order option in stores. The special order SKU to order this in store for Saybrook Oak is 1000021868 and the model # is 016A71515.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cap a tread Love these! Look great, easy to install. Have 36" wide steps, got the 42" treads, easy to cut. One suggestion to anyone who buys them, cut to length, then use your scrap piece to get your depth set right for all your steps. Don't guess at it, do it right. Would definitely buy again and recommend them.
