can this be painted

Asked by: johnny
Hello and thank you for your interest in our product. Unfortunately this cannot be painted. If you need a painted surface to match a specific trim color we advocate using Behr Marquee brand paint sold in the Home Depot paint department. The reason is our surface is melamine, which is very cleanable and resistant to scuffs you may get on risers from shoes, etc... Although we would prefer you stick with our risers, if you must paint, use 1/2' thick MDF as your riser and coat it with paint I suggested as it's the best and most cleanable paint offered of which I am aware.

This isn't a show stopper because you most likely have to cut the board to fit anyway but you will end up having to cut both ends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Stairs Don't listen to everyone telling you to install only carpet on the stairs. The cap a treads and risers look beautiful and are totally fine for kids and dogs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use, some damage A lot of mixed reviews on this. And after ordering, I can see why. Many boards were not perfect. The edges were chipped a little here and there. But here is the thing...assuming you are using this as a riser for your stairs, unless your stairs are the exact dimensions of this board, you are both cutting it and ripping the board. What I did is cut off any ends that were not perfect (using a 12" sliding miter saw with a 100 tooth ultra fine blade), and then ripped the board leaving the best end clean and uncut. Keep in mind that you put the ripped board under the lip of the stair, so it is only visible by someone looking or the top stairs that are eye level. And, if you finish the job right, you use caulk between the step and the riser. Just remember to order extra for a miscut. And if you order extra from homedepot.com and don't use it, there is no restocking fee to return them. It's a risk free project, to be honest.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Workable It is a unique and handy product if you are refacing your steps. But it is not the easiest to work with for a DIY'er. As the the comments mention it does come with chips along the white, you just have to choose which part you are going to cut off (not a big deal). My biggest complaint is that it does not have at least one side finished. In the video it does show how to cutback a 45 degree then make a wedge to finish off an side that will be exposed, but you really, really must have a compound sliding miter saw to do this properly. I attempted it with a circular saw and it is just too hard to get a proper straight cut on the riser then the wedge so that they meet up properly. My steps are very odd in that they are not squared when you look at them, one side needed an 11 degree cut and the other side is open faced. So it was very difficult to cut with just a circular saw (had to order another one due to a wrong cut, my fault, but still have to wait two weeks). I also found I had to cut it face down so the white laminate didn't chip more than it was the way it come. Overall, the product does it's job for a great price. It is just a little hard to work with if you have an open end and need to cut angles.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from If I could rate lower, I would I ordered these to do my stairs, 15 in total that ran $208 total. Given that price I expected high quality given the MUCH cheaper alternatives. Every single one looked like it was ripped on a table saw with a dull blade as they were all chipped out on the edges.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fine Product This product is essentially particle board with a laminate face. Only the front is laminate, none of the sides/edges. So if like me you have open sided stairs, you will need to take measures to enclose the bare exposed board. Happy with product currently. Will be interested to see how it holds up over time. We ordered this as well as a standard color to match cap-a-tread treads. This is about half the price and essentially exact same product.
