Questions & Answers

Depth is listed at 4.25 in. Is that correct? Doesn't seem right for a shallow box.

Asked by: Steve
That DxWxL often gets mixed up in any description. This depth includes the flanged part thet extends 1/2" to cover the finish wall. It works where the studs are laid flat as in a 1 1/2" thick wall.

How much weight will this box hold mounted in 1/2 inch drywall

How much weight will this box hold mounted in 1/2 inch drywall
Asked by: Plusrider
Hey Plusrider! By code fixture boxes are required to support 50 pounds. Outlet and device boxes such as this one use 6-32 screws which limit the weight capacity. Look for a fixture box with 8-32 screws. If you are short of wall / ceiling depth there is a selection of other boxes you could use like a pancake. In many jurisdictions the inspector will allow you to use the canopy of the fixture to add to the cubic inch capacity of the installation. 2 ci for each 14 wire. 2.25 ci for each 12 wire. All the ground wires together count as one wire. One or more internal cable clamps count as one wire. A fixture stud counts as one wire. If it is a paddle fan then a paddle fan box should be used. There is a selection of old work boxes to meet your needs.

Do you have a recommended cover for this box to adequately cover The tabs.?

Asked by: Wader
Any single gang blank device plate will work. A good selection is in store. Use plastic, not metal plate.

Customer Reviews

1-Gang 17 cu. in. Shallow Old Work Box is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only answer I was in a real bind working with only an inch and a half between a drywall finish and a masonry wall behind it. This is the only thing I could find that would give me the space I needed while still being shallow. You only cut the hole big enough for a regular work box and this slides in and rotates into place. Plus, it has the drywall anchors built in so you don't have to try and hit a stud from the side which is awesome. Great engineering!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for shallow walls These boxes are excellent for outlets that are needed in shallow walls. I've used several in the past. They were easy to install and worked great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from this thing does NOT care about my feelings. Shallow? Oh yes. This thing only cares about material goods, and looks. Good thing it's functional, too. It's able to push important issues to the side like so many shoppers on Black Friday.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great box but... This box works great if your drywall is 1/2" thick. My drywall is 3/4" thick and when fully installed, it sat too deep in the wall.
