I live in an old house and the walls are 1inch thick due to the outer layer of plaster and then wooden slats.

Are the tabs far back enough to fit this depth of wall?

It will be if you use longer screws, I've had to do it before on some walls and it works great with longer screws. I believe they're size #6 screws.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best box for drywall For any DIYers out there that have drywall in their homes, I highly recommend that you have a few of these boxes on hand. Installing an electrical box after the drywall is already up can be challenging, but this box helps to take away some of the difficulty. You have the freedom to install this box anywhere on the wall, rather than only next to a stud. There is no need to nail anything into place and this box, when tightened, holds securely to the wall. This box works great for retrofitting your home for wall mount televisions, installing additional light switches, adding outlets in places like the garage, and many other potential uses. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by I wish they would put 3 or 4 clamps on these single gang boxes This is a single gang box for old work. While it might work well in a wall where the existing electrical installment has sufficient Romex, and the Romex is not held in place by staples (as per code), insulation or other in wall structures; old work generally has these issues, so this box is more difficult to install properly with only 2 clamps. Romex, like most plastic insulated wire has a memory, which makes it very stiff. When Romex is stapled along the stud in the finished wall, the stiffness of the cable makes aligning the outlet or switch difficult. A single gang box is much more difficult to keep straight because the clamps are not as far apart as they are in a multiple gang box, and thus any twisting forces in the wires entering the box will cause the box to turn. I would gladly pay the extra cost of the screws and clamps if I could get 4 clamps per box. A person installing this box will waste a huge amount of time trying to get the switch or outlet flat and parallel with the existing wall surface. Time is money. These boxes have holes for 4 clamps, and the single gang boxes should have 4 clamps. February 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fragile tabs Fragile tabs - they broke off either when tightening the box into the wall -- before the box was flush - or when the plug was un-plugged December 21, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good retrofit box Retrofit old work box. The extra depth makes wiring a little easier when using 12/2 awg. I found that I had to screw the tabs in a little before putting in the wall or the tabs won't start turning correctly. They're made with just two tabs (one on top and one on bottom). Wish they had four tabs on them like the 3 gang boxes. They squeak a little when tightened to the drywall. Overall a great retrofit product. June 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love these boxes Over the years I've used hundreds of these. They're inexpensive and once installed they're rock solid. These require 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 studded walls. For 2 x 3 studded walls use the 14 CU, IN. shallow box. May 30, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect sized box for times or many junction connections Simple to use, just cut a hole in the wall, fasten using upper and lower wing screws, and your done. November 29, 2011
