Nice looking. Sturdy. Fairly easy to put together. NO offgassing/ bad smell AT ALL -- just wood. Does need to be oiled, especially the butcher block top -- I'm worried about staining until I have oiled it a few times.. The company offers a nice wood oil which also does not smell at all at a very reasonable price with no shipping -- there is order info included with the island. Drawer works great. Plenty of storage for large cutting boards, etc. in cupboard part.

My wife assembled the cabinet with no problem. She asked me to finish the assembly.
It is made of poplar, the softest hardwood. Any furniture made of poplar heeds to be substantial if it is to last. Otherwise it will split and dent in the course of daily life. This item is not substantial, especially in two key ways.
First, the internal shelves are made of 1/2" plywood, An unsupported 1/2" plywood shelf can't support any significant weight over time, it will bend under the weight of a stack of ceramic dishes or cast iron or stainless cookware. I fabricated 3/4" oak slats running the length of the shelf's underside. I also attached a block beneath the rear of the shelf, and attached it to the back panel. The front remains unsupported. I warned my wife to only put light weight items on the shelf. It should be okay if she remembers.
Then I turned the unit upside down. I immediately saw that the predrilled holes for the casters were nearly the same diameter as the thickness of the poplar panels in which they were drilled. Following directions, I gently tapped two casters into two holes using a rubber mallet. The wood split immediately around each hole. I put wood glue in each hole, filled each with a wooden dowel, clamped it and allowed it to dry. Then I fabricated an oak block for each corner, attaching it securely to the original poplar panel with glue and wood screws. I drilled new holes in each block and inserted the wheel casters with no subsequent problems.
I have a hard time understanding how the manufacturer can have actually assembled one of their own products without encountering the same problem. US-made or not, when the homeowner has to assemble the product and then do basic QA adjustments for the manufacturer, I have a hard time justifying a price in excess of $450. Better wood (oak or maple), better thickness, or better design ... any one of these could eliminate this problem, without adding much to the cost. I hope our experience generates some much needed attention.

I recieved the boxes a bit banged up but the contents were not damaged. The main fram is aprticle board with a 1/16" plywood overlay. The doors, legs and cutting board top were solid wood and look very nice. Be careful with assembly as the particle board chips off and can break easily. The instructions were included but missing the final steps for assembling the cutting board top. This was easy to figure out. It was missing the four srews to hold on the cutting board top, but I had plenty on hand to do the job. The cutting board top is very heavy and looks great. The particle board frame is the only major down point of this item.

This kitchen island looked very good in the online photo and illustration on the assembly instructions. It came out of the box easily, and looked like it would be easy to assemble. That's when the fun began! It took three college graduates, one of us an engineer, and much "cussing and discussing," to finally get it put together. The assembly directions were not very clear! Otherwise, the cabinet has met most of my expectations. Adding towel racks on the back will make it just about perfect.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by b0b4 It was more than we expected and we love it.
I read several reviews on this product and found some of them just did not represent this item very well. We love the shelves on both ends and the large drawer that will hold those large kitchen utensils. Shipping was about what I expected, just need to speed up the processing part of the purchase.

One of the few products on the American market that is Made In America. This is well-machined hardwood, German-made hardware, designed for durability and style. Goes together like Singer sewing machine with very well-written instructions. I love this kitchen island!
