You are correct, they will leave a big gap if cut. On the Madison listing one of the bullet points reads: "Because of their unique 3D styling these tiles are not suitable for border areas where tiles must be trimmed to less than full size." However, there are ways to install canned lighting with them. In fact, a Ceilume customer sent us this helpful e-mail describing of how he did it!
"I have the ticket for success with the recessed can light fitting over the Madison tile; take the standard 1 1/2 tall t-bar pieces and cut them at just over 2'(26 – 28”), cross them at 90 degrees to the grid bars that make up the existing grid work; almost like building a log cabin. Since it is standard grid material, the can light fittings snap right on to them just like normal. To secure, I will just zip tie them to the existing grids. I did a prototype and the height is perfect for the Madison tile. It clears the tile completely by 1/4'' so sagging or pressing on the tile is a non-issue" Read Less

I want to change the tiles in the kitchen & bathroom but I either have to keep the old tiles or put insulated blocks along with the new tiles to avoid the terrible drafts in both rooms come the winter season. Are there any particular styles that will work better with the old tiles or insulated tiles in place?
Thank you

Ceilume Ceiling Tiles do not provide thermal insulation by themselves. However, the Madison Coffered Ceiling tiles are robust enough to support the weight of most fiberglass insulation.
Due to the Madison's strong 3-dimensional profile, it can only be installed in full 2x2 tiles. For areas around the perimeter of your room where you may have to cut the tiles, you'll want to use either the Oxford Read More
