Answer:
The Madison Coffered Ceiling tile by Ceilume can only be installed in a 2x2 ceiling grid. Most ceiling grids can easily be converted from a 2x4 lay-out to a 2x2 by adding 2' T's. Just make sure that the tabs at the end of the T's you purchase will fit the pre-cut slots of your existing ceiling grid.

Answer:
You are correct, they will leave a big gap if cut. On the Madison listing one of the bullet points reads: "Because of their unique 3D styling these tiles are not suitable for border areas where tiles must be trimmed to less than full size." However, there are ways to install canned lighting with them. In fact, a Ceilume customer sent us this helpful e-mail describing of how he did it!
"I have the ticket for success with the recessed can light fitting over the Madison tile; take the standard 1 1/2 tall t-bar pieces and cut them at just over 2'(26 – 28”), cross them at 90 degrees to the grid bars that make up the existing grid work; almost like building a log cabin. Since it is standard grid material, the can light fittings snap right on to them just like normal. To secure, I will just zip tie them to the existing grids. I did a prototype and the height is perfect for the Madison tile. It clears the tile completely by 1/4'' so sagging or pressing on the tile is a non-issue" Read Less

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks way better than regular ceiling tiles These arrived well boxed and are very light and easy to cut if required (I had to cut circles in 4 of them to add the recessed lights that I bought.). They are also very flexible so it makes placing them into or taking them out of the t-bar easier than regular tiles. They are bright white. Just remember to buy another type of tile for the ones you need to cut around any edges. ( I went with a flat plastic tile from another manufacturer since Ceilume didn't seem to offer a simple flat tile. The flat tile colour is not as bright white but it looks ok). I will be buying a few more for another room. November 20, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use These panels are great & easy to install. The only drawback is that they cannot be cut because of their design. Also keep in mind that they are raised when planning lighting--we used pot lights & had barely enough room for them. I get lots of compliments on them & they are a great addition to my modern space November 14, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Madison ceiling tiles Great product, looks great and is very distinctive, makes your room look larger. Some difficulty installing pot lights in this product. December 16, 2013
